A note about Rounders, 1998
If you didn't watch the movie, don't read it. The main character of the movie, played by Matt Damon, is not acquainted with Responsible Gambling, which is something no poker player can ever deny.
The character of the movie has 30 thousand dollars, which are its savings in order to pay his College's tuition. But, the character is not a professional poker player, because he decided to take all of its savings, go for a suspicious High Stakes/Mafia poker club at night, and got coolered with Full-House, being forced to work much more and to deal with a very complicated psychological issue for itself and for his girlfriend. What do we do now with our college, how do we pay our tuition now that we lost 30 thousands bucks in one single hand! Desperation? Suicide? What good could come from this?
We poker players are not risking our houses, our families, or anything that is not on our plan/monthly budget: if we are taking money from our own personal economy, compromissing it on a scenario or either we win everything or we lose at all, we should never, ever be thinking about poker!
So, when I decide to deposit 50, 100 bucks at PokerStars is because this money is not important, it will make no difference on my daily economy or the wealth and well being of my family.
Now, if I am a person without financial structure, and I decide to deposit 50 bucks at a poker room, and I will let to do something, or private myself or my family of having/buying anything, then, I should never be doing it:
People talk too much about the 1% and it is what it is: poker is a privilege of those who have time and financial structure. If we are worried about how to pay the next month bills, we should not be playing poker, because we do not have the proper mindset, we will never have mindset/emotional control if we are putting our necks on the table. But it seems that the main character of the movie has godlike readings (impossible) and in the end, even with a friend that this a professional thief, things go fine, because comedies should always has a happy ending.
