I think that at that point you should be more selective with the cards you bet and you should already have a decent reading of your opponents, have a little more patience
This is where you have to use some of your reads about your opponents.[If you have a HUD even better, if not try to play focused and write down some notes about them].
The general rule says that with 20-30 BBs you tighten a lil beat and we play some serious poker, hopefully.Try to play in position as much as you can and do everything balanced. Don't open every button for instance.
ps. Don't forget that mid to late stages will always be the tougher ones simply because the field consists of better remaining players that in the beginning!
by then, unless you have been forced onto multiple tables, you should have a better feel for what the rest are up to. some play crazy aggressive at first but they are actually really tight players, so when mid's come, you have them on a much wider range than rings true. i would say tighten up, but if everyone else is counting their chips and being safe, that would be counter-productive.
today i played the casino.org freeroll which pays 54 places, managed to place 124 out of 5003. This is where i need help the most, what sort of hands should i be playing here, i've been folding around 80% of my hands since 500 players still in. I had a decent stack all hte way to bust out (+30 bigs ) then final 3 hands- 22 min-raised 1caller no high cards flop bet bet bet guy calls all the with 97s he had pair of 7's, very next hand 55 all in doubled up short stack guy called wit J3o in MP,- got moved 88 allin (8bigs) lost to A6
A consistent theme here is, pay attention to your opponents. Take notes on them, look at your hand history, figure out which type or style of player you dominate and which you're being dominated by. Target the players you're dominating and make whatever adjustments are necessary against those opponents that are dominating you. You will find that it's not always the player or position in the tournament, but variance and everyone losses hands that were played perfectly. You may play a solid game throughout and still get knocked out. Post your swing hands, ask for some advice. Maybe, you could've played it differently, but then again you may have played it right. You don't want to constantly question yourself, losing self-confidence, and adjusting incorrectly.
Folding 80% during which time almost 400 players went out seems tight and the fact your open min-raised with 22, I'm assuming in ep? Is a fairly loose play and probably polarizing. It would seem you might need to widen your range although possibly removing a few hands or adjusting what position you play them in while adding more hands.
Ultimately to get the best advice on the hands in question. We need more information. What information do you know about the opponent? How have they been playing? What's your position, stacks, blinds+antes? Need the hand history and not to base the advice or to reflect on the outcome, but how could we have played it better against our opponent to accomplish what we want.
Always, there is work to be done. Keep practicing, learning, and push on. You will get there.
