Jacki Burkhart
long winded rambler...
Silver Level
Well, I've learned a lot in the 8 months I've been on cardschat and since I've made 1,000 posts and learned a ton of stuff, I thought I'd make a "give back" post of the wisdom and highlights along the way.
so here are some thoughts in no particular order:
1) Try to think in terms of ranges. both your own range, and opponents range, and what THEY perceive YOUR range to be...
2) in poker, everything "depends"
3) for tournaments you must primarily consider your stack size before anything else
4) fold equity is amazing, you'd like to have it as much as possible
5) bad beats happen and nobody really wants to hear about them
6) bankroll management is apparently like a religion: very high ideals that in real life may be difficult to live up to and a lot of people don't practice what they preach! But the principles are good in and of themselves....
7) most players don't bluff as much as you think
8) don't bleed chips out of your small blind
9) position is better than mickey mouse, astronauts and free ice cream
10) limping is generally a bad idea with a few exceptions
11) don't nit up on the money bubble! (meaning yeah, you have to play AK)
12)don't argue with Duggs unless you want to have your ass handed to you
13) Re: #12, apparently, I really like having my ass handed to me
14) don't be results oriented
15)Sheldon Adelson is the anti-christ
16) slow playing is usually a bad idea
17)if you don't at least sometimes get it in bad, you are playing too tight
18) if you don't at least sometimes get caught bluffing, you don't bluff enough
19) if you don't at least sometimes get bluffed off the best hand, you are a calling station
20) Phil Ivey > Phil Hellmuth
21) Live tournaments are softer than online tournaments
22) yes, you really do need math to be a good player. no, it's not everything
23) there is plenty of skill in push/fold tournaments and hyper turbos
24)don't fold top set on the flop. seems obvious I know...
25) don't get married to an overpair with a deep stack
26) don't buy in short in cash games
27) don't start a thread on why you think rat-holing is an awesome strategy unless you want to receive dozens of virtual wedgies
28)it's important to analyze if your decisions were max +EV even in the hands that you win
29) everybody remembers the times they get sucked out on WAAAAY more often than they remember sucking out....(it's called cognitive bias specifically negativity bias)
30) in the end, the luck really does even out and all that's left is the relative skill of the players
31) betting > calling
32) monster stacks are built by taking well calculated risks
33) min cashing will not pay off in the long run, go for the glory!
34) better players get sucked out on more frequently than bad players because better players more often get their money in ahead
35)follow the action when you're not in a hand
36) make friends with the player on your left
37) quit blaming "bad players" for your disappointing outcomes and look for leaks in your own game
38) KK vs AA all in preflop is just a cooler. move on
39) set over set is just a cooler. move on
40) never say never
41) re#40 unless you're talking about limping JJ under the gun
42) pocket jacks are easy to play! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP9CBtSW0kA
43) You can't win tournaments without taking flips and getting lucky.
44) everybody tilts, but the players who tilt the least, recognize it the fastest and return to normal emotional play the quickest will prevail
45) don't hate the donkeys! love the donkeys. They are printing money for you. if you can't win vs. donkeys, you need to take a long hard look at your game
46) don't play poker if it makes you miserable. there are a lot easier ways to make a buck with a lot more certainty.
47) free-rolling is the best!
48) great players are not masters of navigating tricky situations, great players are masters of manipulating things to avoid tricky situations.
49) There will always be a table where you aren't the best player. you must recognize this and adjust accordingly
50) Thanks for reading this list and teaching me so much. Please feel free to add your own little gems, wisdoms, wisecracks, guidelines etc. to this thread.
