CC's very own Dead Head
Silver Level
Okay so ive only been back in the poker world for a few weeks now. I started out in ring games (faired alright), then moved to SnG's and again I can hold my own. So in the past few days I've been dabbling with MTT's in the hopes of cashing bigger.
Anyway, here's an example of an MTT. (note all of this is made up but generally how it goes down)
$2 + 0.20 buyin NLHE; 160 entrants; rebuy and 1 addon; 1500 starting chips
I start out playing strong. Playing strictly ABC and hitting big on premium hands. Let's say we're at around 100 entrants remaining. Im sitting in 3rd with about 30k. At this point, im still trying to play abc and hit big on AA, AK, KK, AQ, KQ, QQ etc.
But herein lies the problem. I find myself checking the lobby and within 20 minutes im now in 9th. Havent played any hands so im not making bad calls or anything. Im just not getting dealt anything half decent to play. So while I may still have 30k, the top of the lobby are now sitting around 60 to 70k. I wait and wait, possibly even dabbling with a 10 Qs or two and maybe a 78s or 55. And without much luck im now sitting at around 25th.
This repeats for a while until eventually im sitting on an average stack as opposed to the top guys sitting at, sometimes, over 100k at this point. I watch sometimes and see they are sometimes calling big preflop raises with 10 4s and such and hitting the flop perfectly.
So to end this giant rant, what is it im doing wrong? Am I just not getting a good ending to these things or should I really loosen up halfway through? Also, how do these guys make such calls (20x BB preflop raises) with very mediocre-low hands?
I really wanna get into these MTT's and learn all there is to learn. But it just seems impossible. I look at some of the threads on here and see guys consistently placing in the top 10-20 and wondering what it is you do to make this happen?
Any help would realllllly be appreciated as im loving this but really need a nice cash or two to continue on. Thanks in advance for anyone that actually read this whole thing, let alone throws advice my way.
