I play a lot of live poker tournaments, nothing in Vegas, just local ones. Charity and some casino satellite events. I do OK, I have a positive ROI in $50-100 buyins.
The thing about live is that I have reads because you see the same players over and over. They have reads on me. When I sit at a live table, I know that I have reads on 4-6 players.
Online is different, as ChuckTs has pointed out. Cash, SNGs, tournies.. you can play 50 online tournaments in a day and come across 4-6 players that you've seen in another tournament.
So ... I am a purist and I don't use programs to track the tendencis of other players, and I realize that in some instances that puts me at a disadvantage to those players who do.
I saw a video on YouTube exalting the "crutching" you can do with Poker-Edge. It's a black hat program that datamines poker sites and gives you a HUD full of tendencies of other players.
The one thing poker-edge does though, and this is the tip, is that you can simply type in your screen name on the splash page of their website, and get your overall tendency... yes.. you guessed it, you can type in any player you want and, if they have played at any length on a poker site that they cover, you will get a free determination of that player's style.
You will get the preflop and postflop rating. For example a Loose player who call's a lot and doesn't bet their hands and can never be bluffed out of a pot is labeled:
CALLING STATION, Loose, passive/passive
Others are
Green Fish: passive/passive
Red Fish: aggressive/passive
Calling: station passive/passive
Bomb: aggressive/aggressive; no discipline
Warning: aggressive/aggressive; bets when ahead
Mouse: passive/aggressive
Rock: aggressive/aggressive
Shark: aggressive/aggressive
you will also be told whether a player is Loose, semi loose or Tight.
you won't get anything else unless you get the program, but I am telling you, this is all you need for tournaments. For those of you who multi-table, this might be cumbersome to do. But if you play cash games one table at a time, this will help you, too.
If you play SNGs or tournaments, sit back and have this website open and while you're waiting for position or good cards, or whatever, type in the players at your table, Note what poker-edge says about them and then watch if their tendencies match.. it's rather eye-opening, especially the calling stations and the "sharks."
Color code each player's type for easy visual reference.
Once you Note a player, it's there for good.
