Hi folks, recently I played a No_Limit tourney at our local Elks Lodge. Not being a very good player, I have decided to stop limping. The last time I played I limped in from mid position and the BB just called with 32o and flopped a full house. After that, I said "Screw It", I'm no longer limping.

Back to the Elks Lodge, when I'm on the button, a lady named Cathy is in the BB. Always right! I'm the tightest player at my table and playing most of my hands from the button, where I have raised everytime.

She is getting really upset and folds (prolly 94o). Makes a comment, goes to have a cigarette, grabs another bears and sits back down. (And repeats). Before long, other people at the table and starting to make comments to her and giving me dirty looks, shaking their heads, some saying stuff to me.

Should I have changed up my game and started limping with hands I wanted to play? I continued to play my game and raise when I had a hand I wanted to play. Most of the time, everyone else who limped folded...I guess they were caught playing too many hands.

Thanks

So everyone else is allowed to raise with position except you? Tell them if they don’t like your raising they’re more than welcome to 3bet you when the action gets around to them, but pissing and moaning about me legitimately selecting one of my 3 options (raise call fold) on my action, shooting me dirty looks, etc is only going to make me do it more.

Or, “ya know, you could always call and play your “post flop edge” since you seem to know everything about this game”

Gosh that would piss me off if I️ were you.

Don't ever play home games, you can get beaten up senseless if you bad beat or cooler-hand the wrong guy while maintaining and aggro playstyle.

Street smarts brother... Only play at legit casinos with legit security and DO NOT reside in the same vicinity, live a town away at the very least.

I play online instead of live for many reasons; not being beaten up for how I play is definitely one of them.

play your own game and don't give the haters another thought-your right about not limping.it also forces other players to play poker and not bingo-limping in allows other to play chit cards cheap-the button has always been a raise or fold for me I never call from hijack seat or button seat

The complaint is ridiculous of course.

But games at social clubs can be very soft compared to casino games. If this game is easy money, and there is a chance you may not be invited back, then it might be worth it to try to smooth things over.

"Hey, did any of you pay my buy-in? No? Ok, then I'll play how I want, you play how you all want."

So you're the only one that wants to raise pre-flop eh? Do they bet post-flop or do they check every hand down and play showdown poker after that too... sounds pretty boring to me.

You could comment any time one of the complainers makes a bet so they can see how annoying it is to complain about betting your hand.

If you are that out-voted consider doing as the locals do. There's more than one way to skin a cat... you'll have a better time and will surely get a lot of practice with your post-flop hand-reading! :)

Good luck to you!

As long as you aren't breaking any poker rules then you're fine and you can just ignore them. They obviously sound like fish who play way too many marginal hands. However, it's pretty disappointing to hear people acting like that. How can you get mad at someone for trying to win the game? Poker is a zero sum game, so there is no reason to ever make accommodations for others besides just normal manners and etiquette.

Thanks for replying everyone. I have played there for a few years now. They have a game once a month between Nov and May. It's a great group of guys. This was my first experience playing with her at my table.

I'm not a very good player. I would always bleed away my chips and be afraid to get into pots. I have recently been reading "The Course" by Ed Miller and have made 2 significant changes to my game. 1) I started playing a tighter range preflop, and 2) raised every hand I wanted to play (unless I was in the blinds). It was obvious from the start that alot of people were trying to see a flop for cheap and playing bad hands. Once I raised, I would get 3-4 people folding.

Nonetheless, Dec 2 is their next game and I'll be there playing the same way. With a little luck, 'missy' will be sitting 2 to my left and she'll bring her '100% fold to a raise' with her. After all this time, the light has finally come on - aggression goes a long frickin' way!

Thanks again

They don't know about 3-betting?

Is there no raise at all by anyone else in the game? Agree this is the issue with Home games/social games most people just do it for fun.

There were other raises, when they had AA, KK, QQ...I just didn't want to fork my range.

All kinds of people play at this game. Some are really aggressive and raise all the time. Others do not. This lady just happened to be in the big blind with me on the button. Now, shouldn't I be playing most of my hands from the button? Plus I was tired of going there month after month and limping and folding my chips away, so I decided to put in a little raise every time. Also, by doing that, it kept me playing better cards, not just a large range of them.

And yes, no one thought of 3-betting.

She said to me that I am always raising her when she is on the big blind.
I said, 'Not always'
She said 'Yes, always'

So it that were true, while on the button I was playing any of the possible 1300+ combinations I could have been dealt. Some good, more medium and a whole ton of crap. If that were the case, she didn't even need to look at her cards, she should have just 3-bet me like crazy every time. (Well, she prolly should've looked at her cards, but definitely re-raised me some)

Thanks

First if you are playing in a game where people are getting mad enough to grab a bear, then you should probably find a different game. As for limping, maybe mix in some limp stabs, and some limp check raises, just so they dont feel like you are raising every time.

A good player will usually raise on the button, when you raise MP the others will think you have a good hand and fold. Always raising on the button could get you in trouble.

Pay no attention to what others say and mix it up to keep them on their toes.

They don't know about 3-betting?

Games at social clubs often have players who aren't sure if a full house beats a flush. They will show you four to a straight at showdown and ask "is this anything?".

There's nothing wrong with that, not everyone in the world needs to take a serious interest in poker. And there are often a few players who are more competent.

You play exactly how you want to. Simply smile at the others and ignore them.

I think you were doing right, I know some people will feel you are doing it every time. Being that you are on the button while she is the BB, she will remember yours more than say the rest of the table taking turns.
The more I play the more I try to pay attention, because like you stated you didn't do it with bad cards. At least I am sure most of the time.
I did that same thing at a house tourney, not just on the button. When ever I was in, I played good cards and raised the standard 3 times the BB. A lot of the limpers would fold, when I wasn't in the hand it was everyone limp and check. lol
Why hide your cards? Just flip them all over and check.
