Did I play this right?

About the fifth hand at the table, I'm in LP, I'm dealt AKs. As it goes around the table, villain in middle position bets 20bb, I fold. The flop comes with two of my suit cards, villain folds. The turn completes my flush.

Was I right to fold to a 20bb bet, not having an idea of the villian's history?
(and yes, I'm still in the play pens)

Need more info to answer that.

Was it an MTT? A SNG? What was your stack? What was villains stack?

What happened after you folded is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is whether folding was the right decision or not.

AKs is a very strong hand, so folding was probably wrong.

It was at a SNG, max buy-in was 20bb, my stack was 18bb, and I don't remember the villain's stack, probably around 40-50bb. So I would have been going all in pre-flop.

errr you say "max buy-in was 20bb" but in a SNG everyone starts with the same number of chips, you can't buy in for different amounts. I'm confused lol, are you sure it wasn't a cash game?

edit: and you normally start SNGs with around 75-100bb

My bad, I'm still learning the lingo. :) Yes, it was a cash game.

Ah OK :)

For 20bb I'm shoving it in then!

I play 100BB cash-games and my range for going all in vs. a completely unknown villain is AK, QQ, KK and AA.

Good God no. Snap call against everyone but the tightest of villains. Also, what the flop comes doesn't matter.

If you're going to short stack, it should take an unusual set of circumstances for you not to stick it in with AKo. Like multiple people are already all in or pot committed when it's your turn to act.

And as already stated, what happens after your chips go in doesn't change what action you should have taken. It's a bit of a simplification, but as a short stacker, your goal is to put your chips in when you're +EV. And it doesn't have to be all that high an EV. Assuming you steal some blinds and win a few hands when someone opens and folds to your shove, you only need to win half the times you're allin and called to be profitable. And unless you know something unusual about the strength behind the big opening bet, AKo has to be better than 50%.
