Last week I wrote a comment saying that you should always play KK. Well last night I folded KK to protect my position in a qualifier. I was about 10 above the bubble but only about $1K better than the bubble position. I was on the button and everybody folded up to the guy before me. He raised 750 and after thinking about it I folded. The guy after me called and a K hit on the flop. I made the cut off and got entry into the EPT Monte Carlo Weekly Final with a first prize package of $18,800 including entry into the European Open in Monte Carlo at the end of April. 2nd to 250, out of a field of around 700, will share another $5K. The aim here was to get through and not worry to much about position. In a tourney with bigger cash prizes for getting up the leaderboard I would have not only called but probably gone all in with KK in this postion.

hmmm... so are you a genius for making the only reasonable and obvious play there is?

and then make a thread about it?

IMO, you should play KK anyways. You were only 1k above bubble position. which means if the tourney continues to drag out your eventually gonna blind down and with KK your putting yourself up real good to be a lot more comfortable.

Good job, Tom1559. Often new players have a knee-jerk reaction to K/K and A/A. They just can't look past their cards to see the big picture.

You recognized the best play and stuck to it. Congratulations.

I think that was a good fold for the situation, i remember folding pocket AA in a tourny ones, i forgot the details but i know it was bubble time with 10 people and 9 places pay, i think i was 5 in chips but i was first to act and i was in the table with all the huge agressive chip leaders and i would be very mad if i was ever to be the bubble especially with 2 short stackes who had about 3 BB left.

Not a bad fold. I folded in a cash added tourney once with QQ on the bubble and button, much different than KK though. My opponent had AK so not worth the risk with a $22 prize coming up. I eventually made the money too. But if you qualified it was eventually a good choice although u probally would have won the pot.

Nice job. Not easy to fold those kings. I don't know if I could have, but I do believe you did the right thing. Congrats and good luck in the final!

Was this a satellite? I doubt I would ever, ever fold KK to be honest, but if it's a satellite you've got half an excuse.

This is one of those rare times when you aren`t playing for the most chips but for position. I`ve won qual. where I`ve been so far ahead on chips I`ve just sat out. Making it impossible for me to get drownout on or coolered. I`m always amazed in these sats. when guys are playing for the CL.

Qualifier

Well you could of played that a number of ways but since you were
playing a qualifier, i think you did right. The whole point of a qualifier
is to ofcourse qualify for something bigger. So im my book, you did the
right thing. I have made big laydowns just like that just to protect my
investment and make the money in a multt.

Some people say thats crazy but hey why do the same players make the
final table all the time.
Goodluck at the tables and i hope to see you on the felt soon

Another scenario where I might fold KK is if I was playing a double or nothing game and someone who had me out stacked went all in. Especially if it was down to 6 players and I wasn't the shortest stack.

Good fold!

Great Job

Always do what feels right and let the cards tell the story.

Everything is Situational and if the Situation Dictates you Fold then you must be able to Fold any hand.

I agree with most of the posters...good fold. I've been in similar situations in online and live tournaments. When the bubble is near and making a check is important, there is no shame in sliding in by folding a big hand.

Well your better than myself then for open folding AA that takes skill I guess.I would never fold AA pre-flop to place.I play for the win every game not just for my money back or to move up a few spots.I have gotten to the end so many times to run cold decked that I always play my hands. If you cannot afford to lose the buy-in which you staked for the tournament you should not play in it.This is strictly speaking about how I play though. The book and alot of people/players will say fold and place but I think playing for the win is always the best option, the only option for myself, scared money cannot win money you know what I'm saying.

Good job and good luck in the tourney. I would hope I had the good sense/restraint to play it safe.

I probably would have called all in and hoped to "secure" my position. But with my luck, that's when the guy with pocket fours hits their set on the river...

If i understood you correctly, you were in a tournament in which the
prises from a certain point were exactly the same between the last and
the first one right? Well then you did EXACTLY what you needed to do.
Why risk losing your chance for the prize package when you can wait it
out and definitly win it? Just because you got King King? any noob with ace
ten can catch the ace with a percentage thats quite possible. Great move
and i just hope that there arent as many ppl who think like you out there
heh.
