very nice gord, it's always nice to hit the BB special and have a fish follow you through to the river

follow me to the river? he bet all the way down and all I had to do was call. I was ready to fold the river until the A fell since I had no kicker.

Wow, what an idiot.

I'd have folded before the deal (i.e. not posted - it's a waste), folded pre-flop, folded on the flop, prolly called the turn because it looks like you're splitting, and, if you were deeper stacked, fold the river. OK only AJ and 55 beat you, but why would anyone push on this river if they can't beat Ax, plus you're risking your stack to split, i.e. win $2. I'd never even imagine anyone would do this with just a Jack...

I don't usually bring in from other positions, usually I wait for the BB to come around. I do try it every know and then, especially if I don't recognize any players at my table. I find that about 50% of the time when I post my blind as soon as I sit down I can get stacked off if I can hit my hand (or at least win a few $$ if nothing else) on the first hand because people first think you are a donk to not wait for the BB to come around and you have no read on them so they try to bully you out of the hand.
In this case, there was nothing to fold pre-flop, I checked. On the flop, it didn't look like much of a bet if he had an A, so I called, same as the turn. The river to me looked like he slow played the whole thing and I was quite worried about 55 since he had limped PF. I really can't be too scard though of only two hands that were going to beat me so I had to call, but it took a while since I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything obvious. ;) Worst case I figure I was going to split the pot at this moment and since I had put more in than I was going to lose on the rake, I had to call. Watching him turn over the J was frightening as I really assumed A + X, so I didn't focus on the 2 - who pushes with J2 here????

fold the river.

against your average $25NL player the river is an easy call - you're beating a random donk with two cards more often than you're losing to a higher boat or quads (of course you're splitting more often than both combined, but this is largely irrelevant).

You're not deep stacked enough to fold the river here, which is why I said
Bombjack said:
if you were deeper stacked, fold the river
. You're risking $16.15 to win $2.25, so you need to split about 7 times out of 8 (13.9%). How often do we think our opponent has 55 or AJ when he pushes this river? That's the hard part...
55 will be very infrequent.
Ax more often. How often is that x a Jack? Discount K, which would have raised pre-flop - leaves 3 cards out of 40, which is 7.5% of the time.
Assuming he has an Ace, then, he's got the Jack 7.5% of the time, so you'd need a stack of $30 to fold the river.
However
a) He pushes the river much more often with AJ than he does with any other A - suggesting the real figure should be less than $30
b) There may be some times when he doesn't actually have Ax or 55 at all, and you win the hand... suggesting the figure should be higher. I do think such extreme donkishness is rare though.
