Here is a hand I played earlier that I think was the right play...
Playing 1/2 NL. I have the big stack with about $600. I had been at the table about an hour and half and was rolling along, up 400 bucks. I had taken command of the table and people had taken notice. I was taking down pots easily.
That being said, I picked up AKos on the button. There was a couple middle limpers and then the player two off the button, a good player with a healthy stack, raised 4x the BB to $8. I called the extra $7 and the others folded. Pot at about 20-25 bucks going to the flop.
(BTW, I was contemplating a re-raise pre-flop but figuring he was a solid player with a substantial raise and I was unsuited, a call was more in order.)
Flop comes A x x rainbow. The other guy checks, and I fire out a pot sized bet. He quickly calls. Pot $65 or so.
The turn is another blank, a 9 if I remember correctly. I dont think this card helped him in any way. It didnt put any straight/flush draws on the board. He immediately fires out a $45 dollar bet.
At this point, I am a little confused. Going back to his play thus far, I know a) He must have had something good pre-flop to raise 4xBB and b) He checked and then smooth-called my pot sized flop bet. Now he is throwing out a nice sized bet on the turn following a card that likely didnt help him.
So I think a while and it makes sense to me that he is holding rockets or, at the minimum, flopped a set of something else and was slowplaying them knowing an ace is on the board. That explains his preflop raise and smooth call on the flop. With the board showing no straights or flush draws, he was able to allow me to take control of the betting.
That being said, I laid down my hand. He didn't show me his hand.
Do you think this was the correct play? Did I make a good read or overthink myself?
