I have been reading up about the cheating that happened with Absolute Poker and decided to look into it further. What I found is kind of daunting, seems this a bigger problem than i had first thought. If a site has a problem with a cheater or they have problems with software, or they just decide to close up shop and take your money, can they be held accountable and by who? With these sites based out of the USA is just a free for all? Do i have something to worry about?

I don't think you have much to worry about with the large, established sites like Full Tilt and pokerstars. I'm not sure how far down the totem pole you need to go before you should start worrying. If you did have a problem with an offshore site, I don't think there's anyone to appeal to to hold the site accountable. You just have to trust them. When the government makes laws to try to protect you from your own decision-making, that's a bad sign. For example, does Kentucky really care about their poker-playing citizens, or are they trying to get a piece of the pie or protect their other gambling establishments, i.e. horseracing? I think it's the latter.

the amount of worry you should have should be equal to the amount of stakes your playing. cheaters are going after the big money , smaller buy-ins and smaller stakes are way more likely not to have cheaters.
stick to established big name sites, there not going away.

Pokerstars and Fulltilt don't have master accounts/access files that can see everyone's cards.

Its really quite simple. Play on the bigger sites, the places that have people playing hundred of thousands of hands per month, the players police it.

Play on ripoffpoker.com (etc) or one of the thousands of fly by night sites out there and you really are asking for trouble.

Always play the big popular sites. Before UB updated there software they had many bots playing the micro limit tables and in the sit n gos. It really wasn't that big a deal since they were so easy to read. They either went allin or fold every hand. Allin with any face card in the hole, or any pocket pair. If they were the blind and just checked all you had to do was bet anything and they would fold. It seemed very easy to take their money to me.

No....

Did you happen to notice that this happened quite a while back and was investigated thoroughly? How about the mass neggative publicity that cost the site millions in lost revenue because everyone stopped playing there? Bear in mind it was a few corrupt employees that found a hole in the software that were the problem. Now players watch for this stuff using poker stats tracking sites, every decent site self polices their players stats looking for strangly high win rates to catch any cheats they can find.

No way will the big sites (Stars, FullTilt) will risk loosing everything to cheat a few high rollers, small sites I'd still stay away from.
