Some people argue yes because the losing players will eventually give up.

My opinion is no - this is my reasoning.

online poker is just a progression of a game / game varient that has been around for centuries. People have gathered and gambled on cards pretty much since we were able to make them. Internet just brings it to the masses. And what about the developing world who do not even have access yet - they have not even had the opportunity to play.

Thnk about sports betting. It has also been around for centuries (in some form or other) - and with the invenetion of the internet it has just made it easier to do. Will the losers give up? I dont think they do as the general rule. Internet sports betting will not die. Why would poker?

I don't see it ever dieing. I see it evolving. People will always play poker, and the internet makes so much sense.
I forsee virtual poker tournaments. You pop on your VR glasses, and your inside a virtual casino. You can look around at other people from around the world playing. You can pick up your cards like your at a real casino. You'll be able to pick up on tells by their virtual body actions.
Ok I'm not a psychic, but that would be very cool. Don't you think?
PKR has already started that process with their 3D poker rooms.

it would be cool, but I think we would need to see that kind of technology bundled as standard with a games console before its incorporated into the world of online poker.

I dont think online poker will die but I do think the main game of Holdem will switch to another game.
Of course this is just me speculation.

People will be playing poker online for a long time to come. Google searches for PStars and FT are still on an upswing from 2004.

I do see Internet Poker becoming less profitable though. Deposit limits, difficulty of depositing, uncertain legal status (US), tracking software, etc... make it difficult for the really bad players to stick around.

It is sooooo overexposed/advertised on T.V. that it will never die. Even if the losing players stop playin', new players will always come around because of the advertising that goes on.

I don't believe that Online poker will perish anytime soon...
I just think that certain players will stop playing cause they don't have what it takes to be a winner at the tables.
But People like me don't always have a chance to run out to the casino.
Poker keeps us young....We get onlder cause we stop playing-{Doyle Brunson} said it best.
Good luck at the tables everyone.

Internet sports betting will not die. Why would poker?

The big difference between Internet sports betting and poker is that there is no possible manipulation of Internet sports betting. You are betting on a real world event. It's just that the internet makes it easier than going to Vegas and safer than going to a bookie.

Internet poker has already had one major scandal with the Absolute/UB superuser account. All it would take would be another major scandal and online poker could be seriously hurt. Especially if the scandal happened at PS or FT.

Ultimately, online poker will never go away. Because as you mentioned people have gambled on cards for as long as they have made them. But whether it remains as popular as it has the past 5 years...only time will tell.

I don't think it will DIE, but it does seem to me that the fad of poker in general is starting to wane a bit. I think it's a combination of the economic downturn and the overexposure of poker on TV.

it won't die but it will definitely get harder to beat. ask anyone who played online 5 years ago compared to now and they'll tell you the level of skill has increased tremendously across all limits (yes even the micros!)

I think online poker is here to stay. I think some other game will appear to dethrone hold'em just as hold'em knocked 7 stud off the top of the heap.

Poker and online poker are so successful right now that I do not see online poker dying. There will be more and more sites to play poker on as years go by. There will be more people who will play just online instead of live.

As for the game, hold em could change over the years. Didnt stud use to be the main game back in the day?
