for me poker is just a pleasure, of course I would like to win a lot of money, but very often you are overwhelmed with a hand much weaker than yours, so dreams aside, and there is only pleasure )
For me it's about setting small goals in order to hit bigger ones. For example I deposited $100 to start. My next goal is $150 then $300, $500, etc. I find this keeps me on track from tilting as well.
I only have one goal when it comes to poker but it does not happen often and that is winning. I don't care what the prize pool is although the money will always come in handy. win or lose poker is still a fun strategic game to play but the goal is to win.
My biggest goal is to be able to make a living just by playing poker. That goal is still far away and it's probably going to take years or even a lifetime, but that's truly my ultimate goal. Then I have a smaller goal and that is just to climb up the stakes to the next level, one step at a time. My goal for this year is to climb just one step higher but if everything goes well, I will be able to fulfill that goal already before the summer. That gives me a good mood and that's why I like to give myself a lot of time to achieve my goals because I want to be positively surprised if it happens sooner than I expected I then have even smaller goals for each session like "don't tilt" and even if I lose that session, I am happy if I have been able to achieve that.
you don't need to be a professional to play against the best players you could just save up the entrance fee and give it a one shot go. one day I will be in the main event of the wsop.
I really enjoy the game with its combination of maths, statistics and psychology. Like everyone, I would like to get better and have my bankroll finance itself. also playing $1/$2 NL cash games sustainably would be a (very) long-term goal - and have lots of fun on the way.
I want to increase my understanding of the game and my skills every day and one day to play with the best players. That is my goal and it motivates me to work hard.
my real goal is to become a pro! but I know this is going to take a long time ... so for this year my main objective is to build a decent bankroll to play a good grid of tournaments, and who knows, one day I may reach my main goal.
Build up a bankroll through freerolls. It's a slow process but am up to $13 dollars so far so I'm fully rolled for 10 cent mtt's with some .25 and .50 shots here and there. It's not great but its a start. I have been playing since 2002 just not going to deposit money after what happened with Black Friday.
Poker helps temper the character and become mentally stronger and sturdier. And of course at the same time earn money. Only need to be patient and it worked.
