Hey people whats up?!?
I am a newer member to Cardchat so just wanted to say Hi to everyone!

I am just wondering what people in this forum prefer.....6 people max on a talbe or 9 people max, and WHY?

I tend to like the 6 tables cuz of course theres less people which equals better chances lol but also because in a 9 player table, it seem to take forever to actually win a hand...someone always beats me and i get blinded out n stuff lol

I started with 6-max and played it exclusively up until a few weeks ago.

Now I'm playing FR exclusively, which is a lot easier to beat, but a lot more boring as it's more of a game of patience.

What I like better I guess depends on my mood. For actual play, 6-max. But if I'm in a relaxed mode FR would be better.

An advantage of 6-max is that there's more opportunity for people to make mistakes, as they have to play more.
An advantage of full ring is that there are more people who can make mistakes.

Can anyone reconmend a good book on 6 max?

I play FT but am interested to learn how to alter my game for 6 max.

Most books I have seen are geared towards FT.

I play limit holdem btw

Thanks

I prefer a FT ( in cash games ) mainly because there will always be more cash in play. A FT also gives a slight advantage to TAG players as all hand values are decreased so waiting for premium hands becomes more rewarding, and my favorite reason the blinds rotate slower. Now i still love playing 6 handed but those are my reason why I lean towards full tables, but you cant beat the action of a short handed table. My favorite forum of poker is heads up.

I prefer a 9-player for sure. Mainly because this is where I have the most experience. I don't consider myself an 'action junkie' when playin' in Mtt's and the FT suits my TAG game just fine.
On cash table play,.. I like both about equally but tend to play more 6-max tables there.
Playing a limited amount of hands in a FT game isn't boring at all for me,... I don't mind waiting patiently and then raking in large pots. My enthusiasm is sparked as I aniticpate going deeper into the tourney and don't need to play alot of hands to keep enthused.
The most common error of novice poker players is that they play too many hands (and probably next is that they 'call' too often).
I think it just comes down to personal preference.

Both types of tables are fine to play on, as long as you realize that you play differently on them. Full-tables are better suited for TAG play. Yes, you will play fewer hands, but often get more mileage (if played right). 6 handed games are looser, and SHOULD see fewer rivers.

There are significant differences between them, and I've enjoyed both. I mostly played full ring until recently, but in the last month or so have found the 6-max games profitable enough to switch.
You can make a profit at full ring games with a relatively straightforward strategy, especially at games like Omaha High/Low. You can play tight, because the blinds aren't coming round too fast, so you're always playing premium hands, not the tricky ones.
In 6-max, if you try to just play the standard ultra-tight game recommended in most poker books, you'll be more visible as not having played a hand, and will get no action when you do play, while the blinds coming round more will eat you up, so you'll lose more waiting for a hand and then get paid off less. Instead, you need to see a few more flops, defend your blinds more often (though not invariably), and pay more attention to the other players to work out where you are in those tricky hands. You'll have more of a chance to steal or bluff, although as always this is an over-used strategy by many, and the less you use it the more likely it is to work when you do.
In all, you have to bring more elements to your game to play 6-max well, and the swings can also be enlarged - getting dealt bad hand after bad hand the blinds are hitting more, and you're seeing more missed flops. Where I've found it most beneficial is in having more opportunity to isolate someone on tilt, so you're playing heads up (or at most 3-handed) with them, and can take more of the chips from their bad play.
It's better to start on full ring, though, to get a solid strategy fully functional, IMO, and you can then build on that to do well at 6-max

Check out Howard Lederer's section on Limit Poker in "Full Tilt poker strategy Guide."
Also check out Harrington's second volume of "Harrington on Holdem" - good short-handed discussion.
I also read Chan's book on Limit Holdem, but can't really recommend it.

Good luck!

Take a look at This Poll and after 52 votes it's perfectly matched 6 vs full and cake vs biscuits.

I'm more of a FR player, as it fits my style better. It's easier for me to multi-table, playing fairly nitty...the opposite of the aggressive 6 max approach.
