I was playing a match of live poker at a final table on Saturday and two people were heafds up post-flop, one of the guys said to the other while it was his turn to act “What’s your favourite radiohead album?”

I found this amusing but have never heard of random questions being asked before, it obviously must be a tecnique to get a tell off your opponent, does anyone know anything about this technihque or method and what it may be called? Or can anyone shed any more light on what this actually means?

Casual talk = comfortable player = he's happy with his hand.
Not many casual players can strike up a conversation like that when bluffing.

Of course, the asker could have been fishing for that same sort of information. That is, he could be trying to see how the other guy reacts. If you tell a stupid joke and they give a genuine smile or giggle, they are comfortable, which generally means they have a good hand. So maybe he was trying to see how comfortable the other guy was talking about his musical preferences?

Yeah, if ya in a hand with someone that can read good, you wanna keep silent no matter what they say to ya....thats why you see pro's wearing shades and huddies and things, and keeping totally silent...(especially online players)

I'm guessing it to see if when he responds it to see if his speech come out normally or stuttery or maybe nervously. Maybe the person asking the question was trying to get his mind off of his nervousness.

It was probably code. Maybe they were colluding and it was his way of asking the other player what his cards were?

Maybe the other guy was wearing an 'I HATE RADIOHEAD' shirt and was just trying to get a rise outta him ;)

Kid poker talks about this in one of his books. Basically he points out that unless you have a serious edge in ability over your opponent, don't talk during hands. So keep your trap shut!

Maybe by asking such a tricky question he was trying to get the opponent to spend so long thinking of an answer that they would timeout giving him the hand by default.

I prefer to ask their views on Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

I talk all the time at the tables to bluff and boss some around. He was just letting him know that he better have a good hand because he has one!

Johnny Rotten: Cot the str8 please call.
