Ok so I'm down the the last six - top three get paid in a live mtt last night - and to be honest my chances of making the money are all but gone have just taken a big hit - a,q v a,k - everyone s short stacked (will not the guy who had the ak :)) So I straddle all in (1bb) utg.

So yeah I'm going home almost certainly but I want to take my longshot everyone folds to the small blind who pushes all in - the big blind mucks. I look down and my cards are gone.

The TD is called over and it s too bad- so sad ciao.

I was pretty f ing angry but have now realised it happens quite a lot and the rule is protect your cards or it s your fault - am still angry btw.

What pisses me off is one of the players to my left or right has to be the person who mucked my cards (both also short stacks)- not the dealer and this is where the rule bothers me.

It encourages cheating - now I dont think either of these guys did it deliberately in this case to be honest- neither of them are that petty but it means that really you can just muck someone elses cards and if no one sees you doing it oh bye bye......

In short I wont go and play live again for a while and when I do go I m going to take my mouth guard from AFL/kick boxing as a card protecter

A - Because it's gross so you touch that you're going to pay attention
B - As a reminder if anyone touches my cards before I've mucked I'm going to beat the shit out of them :D

Anyway all angry joking aside - has this happened to anyone else - I know it happened in this year wsop - and what do you reckon to it as a rule - I know, I know protect your cards but it seems horribly flawed and seems to reward either cheating or sloppy dealing.

Here s what happened to one chick on Day 4 of the WSOP

YouTube - WSOP 2009 - AA preflop in to the muck (dead hand)

Dealer s first response - 'and did you protect your cards'

I tell you one thing after watching that I will never, ever, ever tip a dealer at a casino if I cash in a big tourney.

Why? Because you failed to protect your cards?

No because a tip should be a sig og good service and the entire protect your cards rule seems to infer you're not going to get it

ie protect your cards cos chances are the dealer will **** up at some pt and you will be going home.

Same way I wouldn t tip a waitress who overcharged me

oh and if the waitress said sorry I might change my mind

if she said - well you didn't you check your bill, I would nt be putting my hand in my pocket and tbh I don t even mean that I'm just pissed off still.

The rule seems a little harsh- that s what I wanted people s thoughts on

The rule is the rule, the dealers have enough crap to worry about.

This has been a long standing problem and while you might feel sore about it. quite correctly, it is up to each player to protect their cards. The video which is now pretty infamous demonstrates the problem very well. I am not sure I would have been as understanding however.

Yes these type of things are often tough to deal with from a players point of view because often the ruling leaves the player on the short end of the stick. Tough, deal with it! What would you like them to do? These things happen its the human nature NOBODY"S PERFECT. Human error, if its not yours yes it sucks but it happens. Let me compare it with refs/umpires in proffesional sports. They mess up too yes, but we pay these guys to make these rulings and run these games, SO LET THEM MAKE THESE RULINGS AND RUN THE GAME. Say an NFL ref got in a recievers way and prevented him from making a play on the ball. Is it his fault. NO! He has to be down there, REFS ARE IN PLAY! So your going to pay him to be down there and then fire him for being down there? Doubt it. Nobody seen the previous 3 hours when that dealer ran that game flawlessly. They are only interested in the one hand he messed up. Would you rather deal yourself?

Never happened to me yet, but I pay pretty close attention to my cards. A terrible situation all the way around. I'm sure the dealer feels bad, even if he tries to shift blame to player.

Protect your cards because the dealer is busy dealing with possibly 8 other people and trying to figure out what theyre doing. I dont see how that is the dealers fault, they cant read minds. The fact that you wont tip any dealer now is just stupid because thats like saying (using your waitress) you got bad service at a restaurant so youll never tip another waitress. It just sounds like youre incredibly angry for failing to follow the rules. Its happened to me live before, and shit happens. I didnt protect like i was supposed to and they went in the muck. But when it happened to me it was my first time playing live, and i didnt really know much. If this isnt your first time playing live, you really cant be mad at anyone but yourself. The dealer look, see they arent protected and assumes they are to be taken. Dont have things next to the garbage can and expect the garbage man to not pick them up.

Tough lesson to learn the hard way, it sucks. But everyone is right, it is up to the player to protect his/her cards and no one else, period. I always carry a large heavy coin (from a casino that I got for taking 1st place in a major mtt) and I put that coin on top of my cards and it stays there until I throw my cards in.

He said he didn't think it was even the dealer who took the cards but another player.
So in your opinion if you pushed all in in a major tournament and then the player next to you or some random spectator deliberately grabs your cards and throws them in the muck that should just be tough luck, your fault for not protecting them properly, and you lose your whole stack

Yes. It sucks that someone would intentionally do that, I've never seen it myself where it was intentional, but the fact is they are your cards and your responsibility to protect them.

A player ? I dont think so... protect your cards , put a chip on them

thats like the most basic rule of ' live play '

The dealer has too many things to do other than worry about your cards..

that's absolutely shocking - too bad she had aces, it makes for good tv, but she got robbed. i'll have to remember to sit further away from the dealer than that, if it makes any difference. 'protect' your cards? I'd like to see someone get their hand chopped off grabbing another player's cards - "I was just protecting my stack."

It's happened to most of us at one point or another. Usually not in an important pot, but still, it's the kind of mistake you (should) only make once.

Too bad for the woman in the video that her mistake was in a large buyin tourny.

Sorry man. But that WSOP hand in the video was heart-wrenching. I don't know what I would have done if the dealer would have mucked my hand especially if it was a premium hand.

Yes, it sucks, especially if you say the dealer didn't do it. It seems that casinos could do what the NFL did and go to the replay. After further review....

The bummer in the case of the woman in the video was that she was all in and thus had no extra chip to protect her cards. I may be imagining this, but I think I remember hearing about a rule at this year's WSOP against putting stuff on the table (card protectors). I may be in left field, but in the little coverage I watched I don't remember seeing any being used.

I think most people posting here are talking aload of rubbish. You should have protected your cards? Come on for example in that video she says all in yh the dealer has alot to think about but come on he can listen cant he. And alot of you are saying protect your hand? How would you like to be deep in a tournament and get knocked out in that way? Put your self in his shoes instead of trying to be all plain about it. With emotions running through your body dieing to get into the money. just something to think about.

I protect my cards at all times, not that hard, put something over them when you are not looking at them.

That WSOP hand was nuts. Her cards were not shoved out, like you do when you are mucking them. The dealer reached in front of her and took them. I cannot imagine how she stayed as calm as she did. I would have been going bananas. Just watching it makes me crazy.

Other than placing one's hand firmly on top of the cards, I've never understood how some object protects them from stupid dealers or antagonistic players. Unless the object bites. Or attacks. Also, I didn't see objects on the table this WSOP.
