How are the different forms of poker so different - help???

Hi all.

Just going through my stats since April this year and they are almost exactly the same as last years stats.

Basically, it goes like this...

April through August

MTT - Profit of $933.95 - Staked $2060.10 - It has not been on the back of one big win (Check out Official Poker Rankings - Poker Ratings, Poker Results and Statistics) Average stake about $10

SNG`s - Profit of $144.95 - average stake about $10

Cash/ ring games - loss of $329.21 :eek: play $1/2 FL/ PL/ NL

So, immediate thoughts are "Stop playing ring games" :D

Any thoughts guys? Could it be a mindset thing?

I feel I can manage my way through a tourny as there is a definate way of winning or losing - chip stack - lose that and its game over !!!

SNG`s I feel I sometimes struggle as the chip stacks in relation to the blinds do not give me time to play my game. This could be the same for everyone, I don`t know.

Ring games - I don`t know :confused: . Patience? Setting goals?

Going by the information I have provided I should focus on tournys. However, the problem with MTT is time - 4 hours + is hard to find on a regular basis.

Any thoughts ???

I don't think your results should influence you to give up on cash games but you might want to change up your approach a little.

Generally, your cash game mentality should be to wait for the nuts and then get all your chips in. If you approach tournaments this way then you'll wind up being anted to death!

I'm a horrible cash game player. I play perfect poker for the first hour and then... I start "mixing up my play" for "deceptive" purposes. Translation, I start raising with bad cards and bluffing too much!

Patience is my worst enemy.

The sudden death nature of tournaments and the increasing blinds better suit my personality. I stay focused and keep cranking up the aggression. Atleast, that's what I tell myself.

I'm with you that finding four hours to play a tourney can be more difficult than plopping down in a cash game that runs 24/7 but maybe it suits your playing style better.

I dunno.

I think double-A touched on it, in tournaments a very succesful strategy is to win lots of small pots to slowly build your stack.

From what little I have read of cash games small pots don't matter nearly as much, it is about playing for stacks which is why usually the advocate buying in for the maximum and rebuying to keep your stack as big as possible.

ChuckT and Tenbob are probably two of the best to be able to effectively explain the differences.

I don't know if that helped your not, it is early here so I am not running at 100%

I believe that this happens because you play tournaments and at the same time play tables of cash, I believe that you should play tournaments for seasons and should leave the tables of cash and to center only in the MTT' S or SNG, otherwise when plays tables in cash only should play this long time and not tournaments. I have this methodology and balances me the results among MTT' s SNG and cash tables.

On the other hand I congratulate for his results in MTT, you are a good player of tournaments by the information that shows me.
Alone I do exceptions when I have to play an important tournament where they have a lot of money in prizes. last thing I can tell that you should have patience in MTT' s, SNG and cash tables, the patience is essential in poker.
