and it is getting harder and harder not to ever so politely mention this in threads where it has happened

You could post a staking request as a backer looking for horses, thus ensuring you get to participate in an affordable stake. Or if you know you want to stake a specific CC member, you could PM them asking for them to always reserve you x% of their stake so it doesn't get "swooped up."
