That's truthfully fairly calm for Phil. He once accused an opponent of being unable to spell poker.

Phil has half a point. He did say "please" a few times. But when he got everyone quiet, he started talking himself. When someone talks like that during their decision, everyone else will naturally think it's OK for them to talk also.

And then he took things too far, as usual.

that's a common dis about anything. "You can't even spell <insert game here>"

and even though he's a crybaby, i respect his abilities. he's made some pretty sick laydowns. and he makes for great TV :)

At least he was clear and concise unlike some of the other mumbling fools who struggled to string a coherent sentence together.
As for being the greatest poker player in history, when it comes to no limit holdem stellar tournaments, then his boast is fully backed up.
Go Phil, take it all the way.

I like Phil. (big surprise...*sarcasm*), but what pisses me off is that ugly-ass jersey. Nevertheless, what the hell is Shahram Sheikhan in there playing with the elite pros? The guy is the biggest ass. It's sad that's his real personality, it's not even part of his game, and he can't keep from making stupid comments even after he knows Phil is pissed. It was the first aired episode of Poker After Dark, but I'm thinking it wasn't taped first. I think it was pretty good TV until they interviewed Sheiky and he gave his dumbass "analysis" saying Phil's worse than The Mouth, but, then called him names, like the two year old he thinks Phil is. No respect. Sheiky=Wsorbust at CC. Wsorbust tries to be funny (but isn't really) and doesn't realize his stupidity.

...and that was my analysis.

huh

I like shiek, you never know if they are actually friends off the camera. Alot of pro's play it out for the camera. Just like Daniel and Mike who seem like they cant stand eachother on the camera but are actually good friends off camera.

People play good guys and bad guys on the camera. It is like a poker soap opera.

I'm not the biggest Sheiky fan, but the guy does have 3 wsop final tables to go along with the 11th place finish he had in the '05 Main Event. He's not just a Johnny come lately with a mouth. He can play.

I honestly can't consider him finishing 11th or in the top four of the heads up tourney as such a great accomplishment and qualify him with most of the other pros on PAD. Come on! lol :) But then again, we/I could ask why Kaplan or Hansen, who also have no bracelets, are in there. I really wouldn't mind the guy acting like an ass if he actually seemed friendly to anyone I've seen him play with.

hey

from cardplayer...

Sean "Sheiky" Sheikhan achieved immediate fame when he and Mike "The Mouth" Matusow sparred verbally at the feature table of the 2005 world series of poker championship. The two spent a "timeout" together on the rail, as well, while counting down their matching 10-minute penalties. The Iranian businessman has been playing high-stakes cash games in mixed variations for many years. He likes to gamble, and knows how to indulge himself in the finer things in life, therefore preserving his high-roller image. Sheikhan began competing on the tournament circuit only two years ago, yet he's been featured on several televised poker programs. He placed 11th, outlasting 5,608 players, in last year's World Series of Poker championship and won $600,000. In 2004 he made the final table of the Festa al Lago $2,000 no-limit hold'em event.

well

Just because you have never heard of the player dosent mean the player isn't a great player. No one had ever heard of Shawn so everyone considered him lucky or a one hit wonder when he made 11th in wsop.

do you know David "Chip" Reese who one the 50k horse event last year didn't start playing tournaments until a couple years ago but has been considered one of the best players in the world for awhile now.

I said WSOP final tables, not bracelets.

If you'd like an interesting comparison, Phil Gordon also has no bracelets but many WSOP final tables.

oh...my bad. sorry. I can respect final tables and other non-1st place finishes, but not when I see that type of personality every time he's on tv (except for heads up tournies of course). A horrible player that's a nice guy trumps a horrible guy/personality that's a "good" player any day in my respect book. Gordon and Kaplan are prime examples, not that they're actually horrible players... The reason Hellmuth gets away with it is because you know he goes home and is generally a nice/decent guy and hopefully doesn't be a crybaby except in the sack.

Just because you have never heard of the player dosent mean the player isn't a great player. No one had ever heard of Shawn so everyone considered him lucky or a one hit wonder when he made 11th in wsop.
I've heard of him, and seen him play several times. I definitely thought his play was Very shotty during that week of Poker After Dark, but I think Hellmuth should have got more respect from Sheiky since he is the worlds greatest hold'em player and Phil was courteous, probably deserved it even if he wasn't, but Sheiky couldn't hold himself back. I guess it comes down to, I can't respect a guy with no bracelets and a bad attitude, and especially someone who doesn't respect Hellmuth, even if he is outrageous and a cry baby sometimes.

This is Phil commenting on the outburst, etc...from PhilHellmuth.com, in case anyone wanted to know what he Really thought...I find it kind of odd. It really changes my point of view. I guess I've got to stop hatin' on Sheiky too much also.:)

Why did I lose it? I lost it simply because I asked my tablemates to "Please" be quiet for a moment?--during a key hand, and they continued to talk. If my tablemates did in fact go on talking after I asked for silence, then by TDA (Tournament Directors Association) rules they would be assessed a twenty minute penalty, and be forced to hold their tongues and/or leave the room. Did they really talk out of turn after I requested silence? At the time I felt like they had, and I wanted a ruling from show producer and long time poker player Morey Eskandani.
I asked Eskandani what penalties were in place to prevent blatant violations of the rules and etiquette of poker tournaments. He stated that they had no penalties in place as of yet, but that they would put some in place soon. This answer didn't sit with me too well--as my blood was boiling and I just wanted justice for the actions of Sheikhan, in particular. So I threatened to give up playing on future shows, and I got into it a bit verbally with Sheikhan. Finally, not feeling like justice had been served; I stormed off the set--only to return twenty minutes later.
At the time I felt like my tantrum was, at least in part, justified. Upon further review (when I saw the show), I saw a lot of innocent stuff going on. First Zolotow asked the players at the table to let me think, well before things went sideways. Duke, who was involved in the hand, never said a single word. Seed and Hansen were laughing and joking in a totally innocent matter, not fully realizing that I was in fact looking for complete silence. And even Sheikhan was as innocent as he is capable of being in that situation (although he did eventually open his mouth). It seems that I was the one who crossed the line here, and I apologize to everyone involved; and to all of the television viewers--for my conduct.

Hellmuth - It seems that I was the one who crossed the line here, and I apologize to everyone involved; and to all of the television viewers--for my conduct.

So when we hear about how the pros stay alert and aware of the things going on around the table - it perhaps isnt quite as true as they make out :D

If only Phil had been using his 'reading abilities' to actually realise virtually nothing that he thought that was going on was :)

Everyones out to get me
no, i just asked 'how are you today?' :)

Phil is 1 of my favorites though. If you're having a game you want Phil to have a spot.
