I was just reading on pokerbloggs.com the other day and came across an entry about Guy Laliberte and some of the biggest winners and loses recently playig high stakes online (for those who do not know Laliberte is the owner of Cirque du Soleil, and has appeared on High Stakes Poker).

Now I never really rated Laliberte againts the other players on HSP and believed he just ran really good not to spew all his money away. However he is apparently an absolute spewtard online. He plays under the username 'elmariachimacho' on full tilt and is down more than $4,000,000 over just 8,100 hands!!!!

About $1,700,000 of this is to Tom Dwan. Laliberte also rumouredly plays under the names 'patatino' and 'ladymarmelade' which are down $465,000 and $400,000 respectly this year to Dwan also.

But I guess when your worth about 1 point 2 bill, whats 5 or 6 mill a year spent on recreation.

Ahhh to be able to play in the nosebleed stakes.

The worst part is that he actually has a superuser account and still loses $4M!

Actually, I don't know if we'd do a lot better than that if we had to play against Ivey, Antonius, durrr and so on.

he can't be so terrible or H.S.P. wouldn't invite him back, the players seem to give him respect as well. more than jamie gold at least.

Did you not notice the sarcasm? That said if we folded 100% of our hands we would only lose $250/hand at railhaven ($1500 every 6 hands) so we would be at least twice as good. Plus we could gain a bit of money from that by just open shoving AA from any position.

He's widely recognized as the donator in any game. They invite him back because he creates action, not because he's good. And as to respect, wouldn't you respect an atm?

Re: Laliberte being on HSP, Zach has it. He's not on the show because he's good, he's on the show because without him it's a totally unattractive proposition for the pros to play on the show.

Pretty much every table on that show has a few players who are rich outside of poker and are mostly there to donate - Laliberte is obviously the only one who wanted to put up $500K at a time. Jerry Buss, Fred Shamanara (sp?), Mike Baxter and various others have fulfilled the same role on lower buy-in shows.

Aside from being a laugh, I'm pretty sure Laliberte also sees it as an opportunity to promote his charity on air.

I like what Belgosuisse said above...

...I have a feeling that he is in over his head competition wise...how else to explain the big losses?:(

I watched it go down. It was very sick. One hand Guy was in the BB and 3 bet Durrrr preflop and Dwan smooth called. They both had over 200K (don't recall exact amount but believe final pot was about 500K). Flop was 356 and Guy led out and was raised. He pushed his KK only to be called by Dwan with 24.

Great video, I can't believe he just let him off the hook like that. That is proof he is just playing for the entertainment.
