I would recommend starting a site that will give you a free starting amount, and try to build that up, or try to win some money on
freerolls and gradually build that up. Not only will it teach you patience, but you won't be risking any money while you learn the ropes.
Play on the Play Money tables is worse than anywhere else - many players that will literally raise with everything, not most things, everything. The style of play there becomes very simple - wait for a very, very solid hand and then play knowing you're a favourite. Freerolls aren't really any better in the early stages, but later on you can get some more sensible play. On the Micro stakes tables the advice is going to be much the same, but while you'll get players playing every hand, it's not quite so common to see capped betting on every hand. As you move up the stakes, the players get a little more careful, although you can still find those that don't know the meaning of the words 'starting hand selection'.
I'd recommend the Freeroll route - once you're good enough to win a starting stake on a freeroll hopefully you've learned enough to build that up to something more.
