I was playing in a 02/04 limit game and watched this guy do fairly well with only playing pre flop if he raised. Position didn't matter. Number of limpers didnt mater. For that matter his hand range is pretty wide playing/raising about 60% of the time.

I know in the long run and at the higher games this is most likely not going to work out for him but it does bring up a good question of what are the advantages and disadvantages of only playing LO8 for a raise pre flop.

I'm not great at LO8, but there with certain hands you either want fewer or more people in with. With a hand like A23x I would just call in early position to try to get more people in the pot but if I were in late position this is always a raise when there's multiple opponents. If there's like 7 people in the pot its definitely profitable to play for even half. You might even raise a hand like KQJT from late position if you know your opponents love low cards because you know where you'll be postflop and you don't need to flop good too often when there's that many people in the pot. With a hand like AA4T I would definitely want fewer opponents so I would raise this and try to thin the field from early position. Good shot at getting high, but with multiple opponents the chance of the overpair winning high isn't great. I guess strong, one way hands play better against more opponents while more speculative hands with lower flush draws you'd want to play more heads up.

Ben....the thing about these Zoo games is that what you do pre rarely has any affect of what others do. This guy played for about an hour and was up 50 big bets in the end. His end stats were 73/73 when he left. Might he have had a good run. yes. I am just wondering if this is the case. I dont have any intentions of playing this way. At least not unless I go on tilt

He probably just did run good. I don't know any regs at 1/2 who play like that. Starting hands run pretty close in value and the flop changes everything, but you can't play that style profitably over the long run.

Lol

Seriously, no one at stakes up to maybe 1/2 is folding for 2 bets rather than 1. When 123 most likely chops, you want to put as much money in the pot as possible when there's multiple players in the pot. Preflop seems like a great spot to do that.

And yes, equity-wise A23X is identical to other top 25% hands. However, A23X can be played much stronger because you hit more flops, and have the nuts for low far far far more often than the other top 25% of hands.

Also, how many players were at the table? A laggy strategy can be very productive short-handed playing LO8. In fact, most of the biggest LO8 winners are actually LAGs who play shorthanded. Full ring nittyness isn't a viable strategy past 1/2.

It was FR and the table was full.

I'm talking about full ring here, and my experience has basically been with 1/2. A raise from early position will thin the field at that level, if people simply aren't folding at lower levels then go ahead and raise it with A23, but this is a hand you would rather play in a multiway pot.

I def want to play A23 in a multiway pot. If I am UTG at LO8 05/10 and I raise with A23 I can almost guarantee I am still getting at least 2-3 callers.
