How many hands are necessary at a level to determine whether the data should be correct over the long run, and isn't just a heater or a downswing

50k? 100k?

You shouldn't stay at a level until the winrate converges if you have a choice tho.

Whatever you think it is, it's probably nowhere near enough.

Take a look at some variance simulators.

i'd say that if you are moving up from the micros, you only need as many as required to get the bankroll for the next level. 100k hands to see if you can really really beat 5nl seems ridiculous to me. it may be a better idea at 50 or 100 nl, though. but there at least the money is... noticeable, not to use a bigger word. ;)

Sufficient bankroll = move up. Punishing yourself with set numbers of hands is ridiculous at micros and SSNL.
