When publishing this news, a very serious mistake was made regarding the 6+ Hold'em rules according to pokerstars:

For that reason, a flush actually beats a full house in this game. While Dwan goes on to explain that some Short Deck variants of the game rank the hands differently, PokerStars is sticking to the “traditional” 6+ hand rankings, where three of a kind also beats a straight.

  • High card (lowest)
  • One pair
  • Two pair
  • Straight
  • Three of a kind
  • Full house
  • Flush
  • Four of a kind
  • Straight flush
  • Royal flush (highest)
Indeed, it is according to these rules that 6+ Hold'em is played at the tables in iPoker & WPN. But, to my deep regret, PokerStars chose another version of the rules, and even in the lobby this key difference is not indicated:

That is, at the tables in the ipoker - Straight is younger than triples. And in PokerStars done the opposite - Straight is older. This is a very important difference!

In the above quote, Dwan is absolutely right to say that Stright, flush, and fullhouse chances are different in 6+ and regular Texas Hold'em from a smaller number of cards. The reason for which PokerStar chose the wrong ranking of the seniority of the combinations is unknown to me, all the more strange that a non-standard version was chosen, which will mislead players who are accustomed to a different version.

Since this is a new variant of texas holdem I think the rules will be a little fluid for a while as the people who decide these things figure out a defined set of solid rules all poker rooms and sites will have to adhere by. Having said that I think all sites and rooms that feature 6+ should have to post there rules for the game if they're isn't set guidelines yet. You may want to get in touch with PS to see if they can post their official rules for 6+ holdem on the page.

This option is new for PokerStars. In other poker rooms this game has been available for several years. There are already many experienced players for this format. ;)

i think i like stars version better (i play on ps & acr, which both had different rules)
w/ straight > trips, hands strength becomes more transparent IMO
but yeah, from probability POV its a bit "unfair"

Drawing for a straight induces action because of the strength of the hand once made. 6+ is an action game and having trips beat a straight kills that action and diminishes the game. Because the difference between the chances for each is really thin there's not a statistically significant difference between the two, so letting the card room decide isn't a travesty.

It may be marginally incorrect (mathematically speaking), but the straight on top is better for action-based game play.
