Speaking of binking a tournament. I just played a god awful 6 HR 30 minute plus MTT last night/through early morning. I made the final table, but I was dead tired at my actual job because it didn't finish until 2:30? 3:30 AM CST time. I can't remember, but I'll never make that mistake again. I wanted to pass out in the office. Note to self: Don't enter deep stack tournament that starts in the evening.

I placed in 4th or 5th can't remember exactly, but the guy that placed 1st was a straight up BULLY to me. Every time I would raise, he would 3 bet me or 3 bet shove. I kept folding my hands, but I kept notes of his aggression. I had finally picked up a low pocket pair so I tried to trap him. I did another small raise & he insta-shoved on me. I snap call & he hits a 7 on the flop to win with a pair of 7s. (3 bet shoved me with A7o) If he would of bricked the board he would of been out of the tournament (instead of placing 1st), but instead I got crippled into a short stack. *sigh* MTT variance for yeah

He won the FIRST hand heads up for 1st place shoving A10s against another guy's Q10o to win the tournament. I'm not sure I would have called that shove with Q10o. Unless I knew his shove range was super wide. Oh well he binked a tournament and took home the big prize while I got no sleep & 4/5th place prize money. Next time I choose sleep though :(

Damn sorry I went on in rant mode: I agree though! If you don't have time to play deep stack tournaments, don't enter them! If you're running good and finding yourself set up for the final table, be prepared for a long day and/or night. Turbos can be fun because they end a lot faster than deep/super deep MTTs. Also a lot more action & showdowns = more bad beat anger fests.

This is why I myself prefer turbos. On weekends I play normal speed tourneys as well if I have time for them, otherwise I stick to turbos.

I play tournaments and sit&go. When my time is very limited play sit&go. In general I love slow tournaments.

I will run into aggressive or bad players sometimes I call them my kryptonite but usually I will just limp limp limp and trap let them bet bet bet when have the nuts till stop betting etc.. make a move etc..

Is a patience thing and is frustrating yes. Yet sometimes when mix it with those types get beat so usually wont mix without huge pockets.

I will wait them out funny thing is a lot of time they lose before have to deal with them again myself.

I play a mix of cash Sit&Go and Tournaments.
I find with tournaments you need to pick ones with smaller amounts of players. If there are over 600 players, then the odds of taking first place (or place in top three), means you will only win about once every 200 games (for an average player against other average players - which is me). If I only play one tourney a day, this means half a year can go by before I win.
I usually play cash or S&G and then take any profit and make a tourney buy-in. This way, my bankroll stays more steady, and when I do finally win in a tournament, it means that I can then withdraw the tournament winnings (leaving my bankroll intact) and smile for days.

I would say mtt = long term while cash game and sng = short term.

Healthy BR, go for mtt. LImited BR go for sng only. Dont recommend cash game if limited BR.

MTTs are definitely fun for me. Cash games it's always the same people over and over again :( Same blinds, no antes, same pace, and etc. It's a grind!!!

in any format of poker play depends on your willingness to damage to a particular format. better to start with SNGs then play more tournaments and then move on cash games.

I have found myself in a tight spot. Sngs are more fun to me but I have proven to be more profitable at cash games. I am looking to build my roll some, studying sngs more, then getting back into that field.

I do love some mtts tho.

Everyone will have a different response to this question.

The answer is: Play whatever you are good at & have fun doing. Think of it as the real world. You may make a lot of money being a doctor, but do you have the skill set or patience for being a doctor? If not, you will pick a job that you are good at and will enjoy doing for the next 5+ years. Same thing with poker, find a game you will enjoy & profit from.

If you are good at heads up, play HU! If you are good at MTTs, play MTTs. If you make constant profit grinding cash games, grind on! There is no universal answer to what game format to play. Just avoid the games that you know are eating up your bankroll.

I am a big fan of the mid level mtt's if I want to go for the decent score. If I want to build a bankroll I will do DON's 5-20.. Then take some of the profit and go to the soft 2 cent 5 cent or 5 cent 10 cent omaha hi/lo..

Yes 180 could come up, but 90 is also worth a try.
So as there are tournaments (sng) with an award for knocking a player (and with increasing reward).
I think these tournaments are more interesting than usual.

If you have time and good internet provider then choose MTT. It a good choice in your situation. Although you need to be very patient if you play MTT because you may not win a big prize for a long while.

best game for me

hi first post and hope there will be many more! i was just wondering if yous could help me out, ive been playing a heap of sngs lately and have yet to win 1 (ive been playing poker for just over a month). im trying to figure out what would would be the best game for me to play as ive read that cash games are a lot harder than sngs but i dont see how if there is really only one signifcant winner in sngs where as in cash you make your own money.

some help and pointers would be appreciated.
cheers

cash or SNG

When I was beginning to play poker I played mostly SNGs. It was 7 years ago. Now I prefer cash. Important to know that cash games require more concentration and more skill. If in SNGs you can afford to lose some chips, in cash it will be your money. And skill you can get playing freerolls and small stake SNGs.

Since you play sngs and since you are a beginner maybe you should try out double or nothing/fifty50 sngs...If you decide to play those you'll have chance to get to know real money poker keeping preasure of loosing money and variance at minimum...

Best game when I started playing was limit poker. The buy in was cheap $20 and you saw every street. Unfortunately at the time no limit didn't exist. Suck out city but I enjoyed playing. Now am a no limit soldier!!!

make sure to look up bankroll management first, choose whatever game you feel you can perform best at and go from there, make sure to read whatever you can get your hands on to help improve your game and just keep playing until you get used to the basics
