NFL owners voted to allow teams to operate sportsbooks inside stadiums during game days yesterday. Fans in one of the states that allow online sports betting could already access the sites while in their seats, but now they can roll up to the stadium early on game day, stake out the player’s parking lot to try to see who is limping, and then run inside and receive an actual ticket they can cash or throw away after the game.

According to ESPN, four teams currently operate sportsbooks at their stadiums — the Washington Commanders, Arizona Cardinals, New York Giants and Jets. Washington is the only team with a sportsbook inside their stadium, while the others have sites outside.

It was only six years ago when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell came out and said the NFL would stay clear of the sports betting industry in order to “do right by the game.”

The NFL isn’t the only sport’s league tapping into the deep and wide revenue stream that comes from betting on sports. The Boston Red Sox will have a sportsbook advertisement on the Green Monster at Fenway this year, and many teams have named sportsbooks their official partners.

On the poker side, the Detroit Red Wings recently extended their partnership with PokerStars to put ads on the boards during the games.

Big heist in Black Hawk

A cashier is claiming she was duped into stealing $500,000 from a vault at Monarch Casino by a man on the phone. Division of Gaming investigator said in an affidavit that on the morning of March 12, cashier Sabrina Eddy, 44, filled a box with bricks of $50,000, placed rags on the top, taped it up, and walked out.

This one gets a little strange. From 9News in Colorado:

“(Eddy) told investigators she received a call on the casino’s phone from a man purporting to be Monarch’s head of operations. He and another man, who she believed was a cage manager while exchanging texts with him, told her the casino was having a problem with a UPS order and needed the money or the casino would ‘be in breach of contract, she told investigators, according to the affidavit.

She said the two men told her the funds would be delivered to a lawyer. She brought the box to St. Anthony’s Hospital, where a man came to her door and took it at approximately 4:36 in the morning, the affidavit said.”

She then tried to call the man, and when there was no answer, she called the casino to tell her what she had done.

Again, from 9News:

“Eddy told investigators she was aware of casino procedures, but said she didn’t follow them because she was instructed by a ‘Casino Member’ to do otherwise.

Eddy continued to state she did nothing wrong, but she was just following orders she believed had ‘[been] put out’ by the casino, the affidavit said.”

She remains in the county jail after not posting bond.
