Daniel Negreanu Named Ambassador for GGPoker Six Months After Leaving PokerStars

Daniel Negreanu shocked the poker world six months ago when he resigned from his position as a PokerStars ambassador. The six-time WSOP champion made another surprising announcement on Twitter on Wednesday morning: He is now a brand ambassador for an upstart poker site, GGPoker.

“Kid Poker” is back in the news yet again and this time, the poker media won’t have to retract its initial reports. Negreanu was named WSOP Player of the Year earlier this month, only to lose the title after the WSOP caught a clerical error that had gone unnoticed for months. After addressing the mistake, Robert Campbell was determined to be the real champion.

Some players, including Shaun Deeb and Doug Polk, who have previously shown a clear anti-Negreanu bias, hinted that DNegs knew of his true POY point totals all along, and was just hiding them in hopes the mistake would never be caught. No evidence was ever presented supporting these claims.

Negreanu Makes Surprising Move

Everyone believed Negreanu would land somewhere after leaving PokerStars earlier this year. Many anticipated he would join Partypoker along with the other big name pros who have made the switch, including Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and CardsChat ambassador, Jeff Gross.

He didn’t.

Instead, the third-winningest tournament player in history signed on as an ambassador for GGPoker. Negreanu announced his decision in a brief Twitter video.

“In a very short time, GGPoker has really made a name for itself in the online space,” Negreanu said in the video. “Their last GG Series, you’re talking $50 million in guarantees, up from $3 million a year before.”

Negreanu also cited the site’s software as a reason for joining GGPoker. He referred to the mobile app as “cutting-edge” and “super user-friendly.” Many online poker players have complained that Partypoker’s software isn’t up-to-date.

On the other hand, players have raved about the quality of GGPoker. Negreanu isn’t the first big-name player to join the site, as Bryn Kenney is also an ambassador. GGPoker also has a seven-player roster of Twitch streamers. which could help to draw other high-profile pros to the site.

Play With a Poker Legend

To celebrate their new relationship with Negreanu, GGPoker is hosting a $100,000 guaranteed tournament with eight lucky players getting a shot to compete against the Poker Hall of Famer.

The upstart poker site isn’t wasting any time putting its new ambassador front and center. Negreanu encouraged his Twitter followers to sign-up for GGPoker and receive a 200-percent sign-up bonus by using the promo code “Daniel.”

GGPoker is attempting to make a splash and compete with PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker site. Adding the man who is arguably the most popular player in the game to their roster will certainly help. Still, overtaking PokerStars won’t be an easy task.
