Justin Buchanan

If you asked Justin to describe his relationship with poker, he would without hesitation refer to it as "love-hate." He discovered CardsChat in early 2014 and credits major improvement in his poker game directly to the site. He may not have a big bankroll yet, but he sure has lots of spunk. Other qualities that make him dangerous at the tables are determination, analytical skill, and aggression--now if only he could be more patient and not so prone to getting heated. Activities other than poker that he enjoys include writing, reading, video games, using large words, and frequenting a multitude of websites. Dislikes include cold weather, cold cards, and hot drinks. His favorite starting hand is pocket 9s.

The following article is rated O for Opinion. While it may be more serious than an Onion article, its purpose is to put forth statements of opinion or conjecture without advancing them as superior to other opinions–except for Todd McGee’s. Take it or leave it. You, all of you, you really, really have NO idea […]

The following article is rated O for Opinion. While it may be more serious than an Onion article, its purpose is to put forth statements of opinion or conjecture without advancing them as superior to other opinions. Take it or leave it. For the most part, I tend to approach poker in ways that most […]

The following article is rated O for Opinion. While it may be more serious than an Onion article, its purpose is to put forth statements of opinion or conjecture without advancing them as superior to other opinions. Take it or leave it. I’m writing this because of an oversight in my last entry. I spoke […]

Aces Full of It: Confidence, Egotism, and the Line Between Them

The following article is unrated. Take it as seriously or not as you want. The more I think about poker, the more I come to believe that it’s the closest thing mankind has created to a perfect microcosmic model of human life and society. At any rate, I’m quite positive that it’s closer to a […]

Aces Full of It: I Need A Hero(es)

The following article is unrated, with no recommendation on how seriously–or not–to take it. If it amuses you, that’s great. If it makes you think, that’s great too. Is it just me, or has poker basically lost its heroes left and right ever since Black Friday? And not that many, at least not the biggest […]

Aces Full of It: On the Nature of Games

When deciding on this topic, my goal was to somehow tie poker into the Christmas season, or the Christmas spirit. This was something of a poser, as poker does not lend itself to the Christmas spirit. After all, Christmas is the season of giving, and poker is basically all about taking. Yes there are people […]

Aces Full of It: I am my Own Worst Enemy or The Perils of Self Doubt

Justin Buchanan - December 7th, 2016

Fair warning…this one isn’t going to actually say much about poker. But that’s okay. If the people who set me up with this blog aren’t okay with it, you’ll never see this anyway. I know I’ve said that it’s a terrible thing to succumb to self doubt, most recently in my Top 10 Worst Mistakes […]

Aces Full of It: Why I Will Never Be A Poker Champion

As most of you probably know, I fancy myself a rather skilled player. Not that if you call me one at the table, I won’t deny it so hard that you’ll think I just dove into an Egyptian river. Really at this point, even if I’m frank with myself I believe I have the technical […]

Aces Full of It: A Vital Issue

Justin Buchanan - November 12th, 2016

It is often the subject of ridicule, but is it justly so? Certainly it can be viewed as a pretentious thing to do. Impractical even. But is it possible that the benefits outweigh the image you present? I am speaking, of course, about the practice of wearing sunglasses indoors at a poker table. Today I’ll […]

Aces Full of It: How to Save the WSOP Broadcast

Justin Buchanan - November 1st, 2016

The year was 2001. Chris Moneymaker won the title of World Champion and the popularity of Texas Hold’em exploded. It continued to explode for several years–at least half a decade by my reckoning. Eventually, the number of attendants to the Main Event stopped breaking records, though it still drew thousands of participants each year. The […]
