No Bologna

I hit up a few players to chat, some visit, some don't. Maybe they are just focused on playing. I'll answer when someone askes when everyone is from or I'll hit someone up when their name gives a clue if they're in my state or home state. It helps pass the time when I'm not getting any cards worth playing. I'm a friendly guy.

When I started playing online poker some years ago, there was a lot of chat at the the tables.
Today players do not chat much.
Why?

because they mostly play at multiple tables, even on multiple poker sites. And because it is mostly unnecessary :)

Either playing at multiple tables and it’s more time consuming

It's easy to just turn chat off and ignore. And because so many people do that, it becomes a waste of time to type anything into that chat box.

I have everything disabled. Chat, throwables, etc. I don't need distractions. I'm there to play poker not to mingle.

Whenever I talk in chat, I always lose concentration. I like talking to people but even when others are talking to each other, I don't pay attention to minor details in the game.

Been seeing much more chate lately on ACR now that they moved the info section away from chat box ,to the area above the table. Unsure if thats a good or bad thing. Many people say horrible things.

some rooms have removed the chat boxes, and others are difficult to read. In any case, many consider the chat as an object of distraction.

I turn my chat off, for a few reasons. It's a distraction and i'm too lazy these days to type as well, also I don't want to give away information. I used to chat in the old days, it was fun, of what I remember it, but these days i don't feel like i gain anything from it.

I find in the CardsChat games (where the password hasn't been leaked) players chat often. Especially in the league games.

However, I only see others use chat in other games to rant or call names:(

Plus I think the fact that there are so many different countries at each table, many times I don't even know if any of the players speak English or not.

They might be busy playing other tables or watching netflix.

Yup, I'm doing both. Not to mention it's best not to allow the crap people say to distract you from your game. I can tilt on my own just fine.

I would say is the reason a lot of people don't chat at tale these days is the amount of abusive chatting going on.
Better to ignore all chat from all players to make the game more enjoyable.

Chat used to be repetitive, some person says "NH :)" every time. Some one yells abuse when you hit a flush on the river.
Every winner gets called a DONK, or EEE AWWWWW etc.
It's pretty unpleasant, I agree with a prev comment, it's not pleasant playing poker. Chat made it worse so we all stopped using it.
I never play multiple games or watch netflix while playing, and only play poker on the PC, but still hate the chat. I'm glad it died a slow death

pokerstars instead added items that you can throw in different situations, I think this replaced the chat function, it’s easier anyway
Plus, many people play from their phones (like me), and I personally don’t see how to write to chat from a phone

I played a for around a year in the early 2000s when the big online poker boom was happening. I agree that the chat could sometimes be good. Just come back to playing recently.

Would sometimes play on a site called Ladbrokes, which is also a big UK bookmakers/sportsbook/betting company. People were talking about lots of things, all kinds of random topics although about half the time it was talking about our thoughts on the upcoming sports betting opportunities and what we'd gambled on. It's what the player base was interested in.

Yep, thowables have replaced a lot of the chat. I think I used one once to throw a coffee cup at a player called coffeelover when he won a big pot that I wasn't even involved in just for a bit of fun. He lol'ed and said thank you, was a wholesome moment.

Don't really see the point or appeal in them, although I do think it's quite fun when someone throws a tissue one, or garbage can at me when they played the hand badly and got fortunate. I wonder what's going through their mind. Do they think they played well? I just hope they continue to play like that with a smile on my face.

I had that happen today actually. Never really throw them myself.

I don't usually talk in the chat because I don't have time playing other tables which makes it impossible to be in the chat, I think this is probably because other players don't talk either

Starting from myself, it bothers me to concentrate, and I prefer to watch a movie while playing poker. There are also players who play on many tables at the same time, so they don't have time to chat while playing...or people are simply not interested in chatting, the poker table not facebook! :)

I am unaware of the reason why people used to interact more before. But I can tell you why I think people don't use chat much nowadays. At least in the freerolls I play, the tournaments progress very quickly, and you have very little time to act, with your plays being quite limited. If you don't pay attention, before you know it, the blinds will be so high that you'll have to go all in no matter what. There's not much downtime either, and generally, when someone uses the chat nowadays, it's to criticize someone else. In other words, you really lose concentration, and most of the time, you'll only find negative comments. It's difficult to see the benefit in these cases.

Yep, multi tables is easier to do now. And browsing on Apps etc takes the centre of attention away from a table. More distractions available so.
