Didn't "pwned" come from online poker?

pwned I believe originated from online FPS games such as quake/counter strike, or at least thats where I originally became aware of them about 10 years ago

In politics and business dealings, I've often heard phrases like "the stakes are getting higher", "he just raised the stakes" and "we're playing for high stakes here".

I have used.
"Tilting" on more than one occasion.
There are tons of sayings that could equally represent poker,or any form of cards really.

"Tilting" might well come from the old PINBALL usage rather than poker.....

I think you're likely right about "tilting", ean. But being or going "on tilt" is distinctly from poker.

Here's another...John wanted to be assigned to special duty. However, being a realist, he know that "wasn't in the cards".

One officer says to another, in this investigation we aren't "at the end game" yet.

WoW I believe.
pwned came from warcaft, not sure if it is world of warcraft.
Amusing it was a typo no one caught and that is how it became popular.

In the new year I am going to try to use Die in a grease fire more irl.
It is in the poker term hand book online. I was surprised to see it there.

QFT. Either Quake or CS. I'd say CounterStrike made it popular tho. Ahh, I miss playing CAL-M CS 1.5.

Either way, DEFINITELY NOT poker/WoW.

If Warcraft is WOW then it is. It was a graphics person who programmed it and it was supposed to say you were owned, and they accidentally put in pwned and never noticed it till after the game was released and being played.

YAY! I can look things up on google, too, lol.

Either way, it's not a poker term. I remember it becoming overused during the early Counterstrike days when I was playing competitively.

I actually saw it on a vh1 show a while ago on catchphrases, but ya I am sure it is on google too.

More poker phrases...

A woman falls for a sweet talking womanizer. Her friend says, "That man's got you playing right into his hand."

One cop says to another "We're not at the end game of this investigation yet."

its in filipino, but one i've heard used here a lot is "pera nasa basura" which means "money in the trash" .... it kind of has a double meaning - you can make lot's of money with crappy cards, or you've just lost a lot of money.
