Gus is my favorite poker player of all time and I am sure he made money on some other side, other game so he could afford such a great loss. Maybe I like him so much because we have similar logic about the game and play, at least I believe so. I watched him in lot of games and my opiniin is that he earn more then he lost on FullTilt, that was just play for fun.

ive always wondered why these guys have for bankrolls. seriously like everyone i look up itll say they have won like 6-10 mill lifetime and then u see they are down like 3 mill on a site. like helmuth i think has won around 10 mill at the wsop but im pretty sure he has a lot more than that

That's just wsop winnings. I figured it'd be more since he has what 13bracelets and is the all time leader in cashes. Not even sure how many final tables he has.

He's probably got atleast double that through endorsements though.

Hellmuth has $17.8m in unadjusted lifetime tournament winnings, which puts him third on the all time money list (just $300K ahead of Ivey). To be fair he probably deserves the number one spot, since the guys in the 1 and 2 spots (Antonio Esfandiari and Sam Trickett) each got more than half their totals from last year's million dollar buy in Big One for One Drop tournament.

The gap is much closer on the inflation adjusted list - on that Hellmuth is in second place and only about $3M behind Esfandiari.

Gus rates 13th on the all time list with $11.2 million in live tournament cashes BTW, if that helps anyone put his cash game losses in perspective.

Tournaments "winnings" don't really tell the full story though.

It doesn't count losses you incur when you bust, just actual cashes..so I wonder actually how much in profit is won.

Hell; I'm sure I'm +$1million in cases online but no where near that amount in profits lol.

To pros like Hansen, they play at such a high level that it is more than odds and cards. They are basically gamblers, winning and losing are done at a larger level than the rest of us. Playing online gives you a source of measuring a players game in pure numbers and lacks the physical tells that are important in defeating an opponent.

Hansen flourished during the poker boom then road the full tilt ownership money train to cover all his online losses. He was collecting big time on full tilts distributements and was probably crushing live as well. Not to mention im sure he got a little something when tilt was sold to stars. Anyone who had ownership shares of full tilt like gus could lose 7 mil no prob.

Live on Poker After Dark and other live shows, he always looks like he's really thinking hard especially when he swivels his head like a hockey goalie. It creates suspense when railing a live show and he's one of my favorite to watch because you feel like he's gonna make a hero call. However, with online statistics like this it makes me question his sanity.

Absolutely agree.

The other issue with tournament "winnings" is that it awards the full prize to the player, even when they almost certainly didn't get to keep the full amount. Jamie Gold is credited with the full payout for his Main Event win, even though it's public knowledge that he split the money 50:50 with his backer. Antonio Esfandiari sits on top of the list thanks to his $18m score last year, even though he reportedly only owned about 40% of his own action in that tournament and it was only $17m profit after the buyin anyway. Peter Eastgate is credited with a larger win than Ivan Demidov from their Main Event, even though it's public knowledge that Demidov walked away with a lot more money after Eastgate got taxed by his government at something like 70%.

So yeah, it's a hugely flawed system, but someone asked the question :p

You are right buddy, Gus hansen is a very successful figure in the poker history. Not only he had numerous partnership in many poker business , he also is a top player who has so many top success in the live poker around the world.
So this 7 mil loss is prob nothing to him . I really dont think that the players on the top most buying stakes are better than him, no way. Players like tom dawn never won anything compare to him in live tournies . It s all propoganda money, doubt anyone can play like million bucks every day in cash game like tom does. So it s all about marketting your product by showing all these big stakes game to to the world to make us interested in poker...
