Odd ruling in live tourney last night Playing in the NL Holdem tourney at the local casino last night and had it folded around to me in the small blind...blinds were 100/200 so since I had 100 chip in, I tossed a 500 chip in without saying anything, making it 600 to go. As I did so, the dealer looks at me, pauses and says that since I did not say raise, it is only a call due to the oversize chip rule in the small blind. I play here often and I have never heard any dealer tell anyone this before, but I know this dealer has been around for a couple years, so I did not question it. I also did not hear it during the pretourney rules breakdown, but I have heard that so often, I do tend to tune it out. Just curious what the thoughts may be on this. I should also say that I did win a modest pot on the flop in this hand so I am not posting this out of frustration.

Very standard - really no other way I've seen it done (tourneyed in at least a dozen different locations in 5 different states). If you do not want to talk (so others cannot hear your trembling voice ) then use two chips to throw in - for example in this situation I grab a 25 or another 100 to throw in with the 500 making it 625 or 700 to call. This will make it automatic for the dealer to recognize as a raise.

re: Odd ruling in live tourney last night poker I just wanna make sure I understand. I was in the small blind, so there was a 100 chip in front of me prior to my action.....then I tossed a $500 chip in... still need verbal announcement here?

Yep, even in my live league, pretty much everything has to be said or you'd have 4- 100 chips thrown back at you, but alot of players do what mediablitz mentioned they will throw in more then one chip, then there isn't any question, except how much is that.

Yep, putting in one chip when it's your action without any verbal declaration is a call. If you had thrown in five 100 chips, then it would have been a raise to 600 total. Or if you had thrown in the 500 chip while saying "raise" "600" "400 more" etc, then it would have been a legal raise.
