Books that should be read

Hello,
I started to read Dan Harrington on Holde'm (Volume I- Strategic Play).
I find it very interesting so far and I believe has already begun to help me.
Has anyone read the book?
What other books should I read?
I'm a beginner and I play only freerolls and Sng?

Welcome to the forums. I would recommend that you read Phil Gordon's "Little Green Book". Its an excellent starting point.

I have that book and more, but i don't know where to start.
I read the book that you have recommended it to me after I finish Harrington on Hold'em. I saw that Gordon has used one of Harrington's book when he wrote "Little Green Book".
I even applied what I read in Harrington's book about art of defend, and worked.
Ty again, and I'll post updates about improving my game through these books.

I have read 20 books at least and I think for a beginner the chapter on NLHE in Doyle Brunson's Super System is THE must read. Among other things, it really brings to light the how(s) and why(s) of mandatory aggression. Also, don't overlook the poker podcasts you can find on itunes and the net. My favorite podcast is on grinderschool.com. Good luck and keep coming back.

Harrington's HOH books are very good reads for Tourney play. I think that it is a very solid base of knowledge and teach you about core skills needed at the table.

I second Brunson's Super Systems as well. This book is also a great beginner-intermediate level for many poker games. You should buy it and keep the book as it has TONS of informaiton on other games as well. All of these games come in and out of fashion so it may help to have around incase you want to change up the game you play.

I also recomend Poker Math that Matters by Owen Gains. There may be better poker math books out there but I thought this one was quite good. I think that knowing and getting a better understanding of the mathmatics is a key part of becoming a winning player. Can be a difficult read if not a math person but I think it is well worth getting through to advance you skills.

Theory of Poker by Slansky is also a good one but a little dryer read.

Once beyond that, Elements of Poker is a very good book as by this time if you are still playing you will want to kill all of the donks and will have tilited like crazy from being sucked out on. There is not much hard poker direction in this one but a lot of soft skill information that is helpful to be a good solid player.

For a fun read I recomend Every Hand Reveled by Gus Hansen. Helps get into the mind of a very aggressive poker player... And helps show the post flop skills that a great player like Hansen has developed. A warning after reading this book you may turn into a LAG for bit.. IMO you have to fight that urge

I am sure there are other great books out there but these are the ones that I have read that I thought were worth my time.

That said, I'd suggest getting a video subscription to training sites if you do start taking the game more seriously/move up stakes, as most books tend to be out of date.

Sit 'N Go Strategy by Collin Moshman is excellent for SNG strategy.

Agreed. For tourneys HoH is the best I have read whilst for a general all round grounding the Little Green Book is excellent. I've just picked it up again and it has real sound nuggets of advice.

I absolutely love the Little Green Book but there's a catch: if you are playing micros there's a lot that doesn't apply. This is mostly because there is lot of people playing micros that have absolutely no idea of what they are doing.

Quick example: pot odds... If you have a made hand and the board is flushing or straightening you have to bet to give incorrect pot odds to their outs. The problem with this is that it is common to have a multiway pot being contested. It is quite easy to give incorrect pot odds heads-up, quite tricky if you are OOP against multiple opponents that are clueless. Just some days ago, I would chicken out and hope the turn and river were good to me, now I want the pot IMMEDIATELLY! If I have at least TPTK I will bet the pot. If in a 3 way pot one folds, the odds are on me in the long run and I will profit, first because they will chicken out, second because I will be making money in the long run even if I loose one pot for every four or five.

Adapating is easy actually, the book itself says it: be aggressive when you have it, fold when you don't. Little Green Book is amazing but way ahead of what is played in the micros.

In addition to these, I enjoy the "Killer Poker" series by Jon Vorhaus and Tony Guerrera. The short-handed one is at my local library and I think I've signed it out 3-4 times. These guys have a lot of good online articles as well.

Check out your library, if there is one nearby -- I was surprised at how many poker books ours has.

Super System I & Super System II are great books. Doyle Brunson wrote them and they are full of tips. They are more expensive, but they are worth it.
Furthermore, i recommend SNG from Collin Moshman, if u want to be a serious sng poker player.

$1850 BOOK
Not being familiar with "Let There Be Triple Range Merge", I searched for it on Amazon. They had no listing for that exact title but they did list "Let There Be Range" by Tri Nguyen. Now get this.....IT LISTS FOR $1850.00...thats right, $1850.00. But it is 170 pages. And the comments do say it is good if you are a multi-tabler using tracking software.
I have read many books and several of them were very informative. Maybe it's just me, but I dont care how good and informative a book is, I think $1850.00 is just a tad too expensive, don't you? After all, if you can afford $1850 for a book that will improve your game, I would think your game doesn't need much improving.
But wait....They did have a used version in good condition for only $1650. Maybe I'll find one in a garage sale for $1500 or so.

+1 The whole triple range merge thing is an ongoing joke at 2+2. The micros have picked it up and run with it. Rolf is of course Chase's opponent in Heads Up for Rollz episodes.

The book you found is legit but clearly not aimed at OP's (or most of this forum's members) level.

As far as, "if you can afford $1850 for a book" goes, I'd assume the majority of the people who've purchased this book are ones who are playing at a level where $1850 isn't that much. (not so in my case... as I'm still a freetroller.. but just sayin'.. in most cases I'm sure that's the case).
ie. A $2 sng player probably can't really afford to dump $30 on a SNG book.. but I guarantee spending the $30 would be +EV for them.

Wow. I'm seriously impressed, PO. So what are your thoughts about the book, other than the playing range of people whom it will likely benefit?

I'm about half way through the little green book and I'd definitely recommend it, I've learned so much from it already that I hope will really help me improve my game.

Orifice, you have replied to several of my posts and your replies have been informative, very well thought out and helpful to boot. But let me get this straight, you are a 'freetroller(I like that)' and you find a $1850 book to be +ev. Wow, that book had to have been a very generous gift or you were really killing those freerolls. Every freeroll I check out has hundreds if not thousands of entrants and I'm lucky to find a 1st place finish that pays more than a hundred bucks. All I can say is....More power to you, my friend, because it appears that 'The Force' already is.

So far in 2011 - 18 cashes in Freerolls for a total of $755.90 (not your typical freerolls you find on the sites with zillions of entrants, etc.), biggest cash was for $250 (2nd).
The book was a 'gift'. I'm a poker book addict & have a HUGE collection.
I don't just play freerolls (they make up a very small percentage of what I play)... but I definitely don't like to miss the Cardschat ones. (+EV, & 'usually' some good play in them).
Name another book... I probably have it, lol.

best tournament book is Kill Everyone, imo. That's assuming you have read HOH 1/2.

I read "Let There Be Range" and I'm sure it will be useful should I ever make it to nosebleed stakes online.

Nice work on those freerolls. I def agree about the CC tourneys, although I haven't played the free ones, I'm gonna give 'em a try.
