please mention.
No I suffer from depression and poker helps me feel good. I enjoy the game and it only makes me feel angry if anything when someone makes bad decisions and wins against me. Like getting rewarded for stupidity

If you constantly lose while playing poker, then yes it could cause depression.

On the contrary, poker helps me overcome depression, but sometimes you need to take a break when you play for a long time!

Poker can cause depression if poker becomes an addiction.

If you are down, it may be good to play, but for the most part you should not do that

Depression is a illness, if you suffer from it poker or any other activity you are engaged in can be affected by it. As stated above by some who suffer from depression it does not necessarily have a negative impact, but poker does not cause depression.

if you're not careful, it certainly could cause depression.

A lot of things can cause depression. Depression is a mental illness. So yes the mental aspect of Poker can cause Depression if one is susceptible to it. Yes it can but would not solely be the reason behind Depression.

Poker can make people depressed, but it can also do the exact opposite and give people the freedom to do whatever the heck they want whenever. Every person is different and if you have an addictive personality and do go on a long down swing, chances are you will start to have some depression like symptoms.

Hope everybody on CC stays out of this realm of gambling and poker in general. Stay positive, never play with more than you can afford to lose, and continue to study and work on your game. If you do all of these, i believe you should never be depressed due to poker.

Yes Poker could make us depressive I am already depressed because of the 2 months loosing streak I am no more the same person when I loose. I want to play more and the more I play the more I loose and so on it's a vicious circle from where I can not get out.

Poker can indeed cause depression, as can any form of gambling, or indeed anything that you do where there is a possibility of the outcome not coming to your liking!

Think how you feel when you go to your local bakery for your favourite type of bread, or your liquor store for your favourite tipple and in both instances they are out of your favourite, or when you try to chat up someone and get the cold shoulder or when you favourite team plays a big game and loses.

All pretty bad feelings eh? And then they all come on the same day, that is pretty depressing.

Lots of far worse things also cause and contribute to depression, not just your cake store having sold out of cakes!

Consider then poker...and no matter how you play you just can't hit a hand, or your recent winning spell has suddenly come to a place where you have bet more than you should and your bankroll life rests on this one hand, and your AA gets beaten by a lucky 72o hitting trips on the river!

Depression builds. It may not be just one thing, i.e. all poker related, but it could be. It could be enough that you continually lose and lose and can't stop losing. It could be that poker contributes to something else that is pretty sh1tty in your life and before you know it you have lost control of the remote!

The worst thing is you can't even stop doing the things that make you feel so bad. There is nothing you can do about it....it just keeps going from worse to worse. There is no end. There is no light at the end of the tunnel!

STOP!!!!!!!!

You can do something about it!

What can you do?

Firstly....whatever it is causing the depression....STOP DOING IT!!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, YOU CANT!

Of course you can. Just because your life will change, and maybe even dramatically, you can change and you CAN STOP and you CAN make it better.

I know someone who was depressed at work. I told them to quit their job and get another one (or at least get another job before they quit so they would still have a job!)

They quit their job and instantly felt better about themselves and worked on recovery. Had they stayed in that job Im sure they would have done something really bad.

So, I can't quit my job, I hear you say! So, that may sound drastic, but yes of course you can. If your job is getting you depressed them leave it! You are more important.

If its poker....QUIT Poker. It won't get better while you continue doing the things that depress you.

Now I'm not a GP or a doctor or shrink or anything like that, but maybe if we start to face reality with reality as the starting point, then maybe the world could become a less depressed place.

You are only here once, don't mess it up. Enjoy life and don't let stuff get you down.

If you still struggle and can't deal with it alone....talk to someone...anyone.....you will be amazed how different it will all feel.

I cannot accept or take any responsibility or be held account for any actions that people take based on what I have just written or write after this point. (Unless of course if you change your life around and make your millions and you want to show some acknowledgement for my contribution to that) If you quit your job and become homeless, then that will also be depressing for you. Have plan but make a change. DON'T just keep doing the same thing that depresses you.

As for poker....if it's depressing you, just give it up. Alternatively what you may find is that you are just rubbish at playing poker our haven't really got your head around the concept of probability or the game of poker itself.

Go on a course and learn how to play properly!

Have a great day!

For me it is a lifeline

Well, I believe poker can affect you depending what you hope to get out of it. If you depend on it to provide you with funding, and if you don't achieve your goal, then you may get down on yourself. I have been fortunate to say that since I have had to stop working because of health issues, I am enjoying the social aspect of online poker that is helping me to cope with my changes. Hopefully, those who do get depressed, can find help to bring them out of it...

If you lose a lot of money, yes you can get depressed.
I play 10 to 15 hours a week and have not deposited any
any of my money. Can't get depressed if you have not lost anything.

Do not take it too close

Dear, I beg you not to be depressed. It's obvious that it's just a game but I understand that it's related to money and due to this so many people suffer from this game. You need to be stronger and have an easy attitude to this. Money is so specific thing, it won't make you happy believe me. So just let this situacion goes.

Interesting thread, many make the mistakes of letting poker affect their personal life including myself which can lead to depression anxiety and other health issues . This can be related to gambling issues. If you have control of your finances then poker will add to a phase rather than something long term. I took a 4 years break from playing online because it was affecting my life due to a divorce at the time and financial issues. I would loose very easily and it would add to would severely my depression . It also led me to believe I can win it back with a big one and started “poker gambling”and eventually spent thousands of Dollars at the casino. I had to attend gambling rehab and eventually keep banning myself from online. I’m much better now health wise but far from getting back into the poker world
