Does postflop equity only apply to the river?

I have always known that you sum up your equity postflop such as on the flop or the turn in order to call with the right odds etc; but I've heard some people say that equity is what you use to calculate the river rather than previous spots, is this true? That the only place to calculate your equity is on the river against his/her range?

If i'm on the flop with KJo and the flop comes JhAd7c and I decide to put my opponent on hands like 77+,A9s+,KTs+,QTs+,AJo+,KQo in which I think he'll continue with knowing that at this point I have 40% equity so need those odds to call. Would this be the right thought process?
