STUD players, ring games, help needed please... Hi all, hope you are well. I`m playing a lot of STUD games at the moment and I`m doing ok when I play MTT. I`m playing low levels, about $5 buy ins. I play a very tight game, I need at least a pair to start, or 3 to a flush with less than 2 other cards from my suit showing, playing open ended straights, etc - so a very basic, solid strategy for MTT stud. I do open up when the ante and limits increase if needed. My question, however, is relating to ring games. I`ve started to play Fixed limit and I vary between $0.50/1.00 and $1.00/2.00. The ante, as you guys will probably know, is only $0.05 and $0.10 respectivly. I have noticed a lot of guys limp in with anything, and I know it might just be perception, but a lot of them do well, chasing to the bitter end with any pair and hitting trips on the river, etc. Now I am not suggesting I should play any 2 cards but I would be interested to know if you guys would loosen up your starting hand requirements? If so, could you give me an idea of what kinds of hands you would start with - I`m ok at laying down a hand on 4th or 5th street. Thoughts guys??? Thank you.

I think that generally speaking, playing the opposite as the table is playing is the way to go. If they are playing loose (such as most STUD high tables seem to be), then play like you are in the MTT's, and jam the pot. I like to play cards that work well together, 3to a straight 2 suited, split and hidden pairs, rolled up trips, 3 suited, and any 3 high cards that are all higher than all other exposed cards. Just as in holdem, just because I see someone win a huge pot playing 62o to a PF raise, doesn't mean that that's a winning strategy in the long run.

re: STUD players, ring games, help needed please... poker Ive also recentley tried stud, at first i only played 10c/20c then as i got better and started reading strategy i moved up to 25c/50c. I done pretty well but when i had a go at 50c/$1 i didnt do so good, so i moved down stakes and kept losing again, because of this i dont really play stud anymore. But, i think the best way to play if pretty tight. Side note: Ive just got pocket 7s 3 times in a row!!

I think tight is the way. I`ve just sat for over an hour in a $1/2 FL stud game. I started with $100 and finished with $170. Now I know it is a one off but the more I sat and thought about the game of stud v holdem, it is more important to fold before the action starts. The amount of times I was watching other guys play most hands and u could see what was happening. They were getting into a hand that was poor but it improved on 4th street, got better on 5th and better again on 6th. However, it never got as good as the origional raiser. So I suppose they were kidding themselves. So I think stud is a mix of losing as little as you can when u are behind in a hand, and winning as much as you can when you are ahead. The big advantage you have in stud, IMO, is u have a better idea of what ppl are chasing. Only my opinion.
