| (Long)OK, is this awful variance or terrible play? ***** WARNING : EXTREMELY LONG! ******** I think it will help me just seeing it all in one post, and reviewing it later, so please don't get mad at the long post, just don't read it if it's too much So, the last 5 days or so I have been getting alot of bad beats, or bad variance, I would say. But it's getting the better part of me, I don't want to tilt again. So I'd like you guys to look at a bunch of hands I've lost most with - 465 euros or over 23 buy-ins !!! - am I playing terribly wrong or am I in variance hell? I know I played very wrong in some of them, paid them off, could've saved a river bet etc. but it still seems too much to me... They're at 20NL, I'm still showing a little over 3 buy-in profit for those 5 days but it's annoying as hell! Sorry there will be alot of hands, just browse through as many as you want P.S. : This just made me realize the amount I lost these past few days - I hadn't calculated before...I am awed! 1) | Wall of text Didn't read all of them, especially once I realized some of these hands were duplicates. Some variance involved, obviously. But you should also stop defending your blinds with hands that are easily dominated, stop calling 3bets with Ax and slow playing your sets on wet boards. |

re: (Long)OK, is this awful variance or terrible play? poker I'll do my best. Don't know how many other will spend the time. Anyways... 1. Variance - he's in position (IP) so he doesn't mind calling. 2. Variance - he's in position (IP) so he doesn't mind calling. 3. Don't like the flop call. IP, I think you can easily reraise this as you have TP w/ the gutter draw. It will also show how strong his hand is. I would raise to $12. If he calls, so be it. 4. The reraise on the turn after the straight gets there was surprising. Why not control the pot and see a cheap river? 5. Depends on player. If he's tight, I don't like the reraise by you. If he's loose, I like it. The loss is just variance. 6. Variance 7. Variance 8. I don't want anyone to draw out on me, so I prefer to checkraise (CR) my stack. One of the two will probably bet, so I also look for a little fold equity (FE). Hey, where's 9? 10. I guess it's variance.....but that rereiase is a little strong for a 1-pair hand. I probably fold. More info on the villian probably helps you one way or another in this scenario. 11. Variance...at those stakes, I find that anyone with a draw and two overs is willing to get it in for their stack. Sometimes I like to peel the turn cheap, then shove. But for an overpair, it is an ugly co-ordinated flop. 12. Is it just me, or is this hand EXACTLY like number 3 or 4? 13. Sorry man, I was willing to go through them all, but as soon as I found one duplicate... 13) €0.10/€0.20 No Limit Holdem Entraction 5 Players Hand Conversion Powered by weaktight.com Stacks: UTG Hero (€18.92) CO DonksAreUS (€28.94) BTN mysmogge (€36.40) 4) €0.10/€0.20 No Limit Holdem Entraction 5 Players Hand Conversion Powered by weaktight.com Stacks: UTG Hero (€18.92) CO DonksAreUS (€28.94) BTN mysmogge (€36.40) ...I kinda felt that this I might waste my time finding a bunch more duplicates. Hopefully this helped. You might want to check your posts in advance next time so others won't waste their time reviewing duplicates. what I would add is, it appears that you started tiliting after a couple of legitimate beats, which, when you kept losing with marginal hands, snowballed the entire downward spiral - don't know for sure because I do not know if these hands all happened within a short while of each otherl. Obviously when tilting poker players do not always make the best decisions, 1st of which is to keep playing while on tilit. But other players can and will recognize a player on tilt and will be more apt to exploit the living s**t out of them. Study these histories and others and see where you can tighten up your game, and recognize the beats will come, but not everytime. Best of luck to you

Some legitmate beats in there but also some bad play. Stop open limping, stop calling flop bets with bottom pair OOP in a multyway limped pot, stop flatting easily dominated hands OOP(villain dependend obvs), lead out your draws in limped pot(they fold so much), dont min raise the flop in the second JJ hand,c/f the river in the 54s hand. Its a sick spot but u dont fold out better and dont get called by worse so jamming is pointless even if u have so litle behind. Also whats up with the turn bet size in that hand? like raising it on the flop in the AA hand since the board is so draw heavy and he def has worse in his range. But yeah its pretty clear your running bad but still some stuff u can work on imo. Please 1hand/thread in the future, walls of texts are anoying.

Fortunately for you, despite the horrible hour of the morning it's a choice between education and wasting time on CC so you have my undivided attention for a while. If you want the best possible advice, ask for analysis of a given session rather than a selection of hands. I guarantee you I'll complain about your ranges from various positions or your blind stealing/defending, it's little standard folds/calls/raises that you need to keep an eye out for and that's what the 2nd/3rd/27th pair of eyes going over your session will help you with. 55: It's a bad beat. 96s: Easy check-fold. You're OOP, just give it up. Multi-way, mid pair, how are you getting to the river against various ranges? Give it up. AK: These aren't the hands that are worth your time analysing. FWIW, I play it the same way though. 77: Don't open limp. Don't open limp UTG. Super standard raise, without some crazy table dynamics going on there's no way you can do anything else 5 handed. Flop, don't check, go crazy and get your stacks in (I don't mean shove, just bet but with the intention of playing this super fast). Flop has a J and a 9 with a diamond draw, you're going to get action, a lot. Don't be affraid to stack here. JJ: Pre-flop should have been bet-shove, make sure you get your sizing right. Stacking 65bb with JJ is fine and folding it would be a huge leak. A9s: Bet-fold pre-flop unless he's an aggressive fish. Shove over his bet on the flop. Not shoving (just raising) is a leak, imo. Fold equity=good here. To be honest I shove even if it's purely for value anyway just because neither of us are ever going anywhere on the turn if he calls any raise on the flop. KJo: Pre-flop is ugly, I would rather 3bet or fold but if he's stealing really wide and spewy post-flop then I don't mind the call. Provided of course that we don't need to be balancing our range against him (if we did, it'd be 3bet or fold). I actually donk bet this flop. It's 3 handed so I can't count on a cbet, but I expect to get called by lots of draws and K's. I'm trying to shovel chips in as fast as possible, I notice now that you got beaten and I just want to be clear that this isn't why I advocate shovelling chips in, I'm doing it for value. I want to get called and I want stacks in on this hand. 9To: Standard fold pre-flop, imo. BTN is short so you can't 3bet and you have no implied odds (even 100bb deep calling is near breakeven EV, imo). QQ: Just to be clear, you're 100bb and 150bb deep here. It's important to be aware of that with QQ. The shove is unfortunate, to be honest it's an ugly situation because we're OOP and there's no clear best line. I probably bet here too, and once you do you have to call the shove which really sucks, playing for 150bb with QQ when we're not the aggressor but I can't find a fold. JJ: Standard. AKo: Dude, fold this one pre-flop, he's going to beat you with a straight. I just got deja vu and I swear it's going to happen. 77: Same as above, don't know how you can't make these reads. It's like I'm psychic or something. 55: ... AKo: Terrible. You're... um... lots of bb deep. My brain isn't working at the moment so I don't know how many bb's it is, but as a guesstimate seriously re-evaluate getting AK all in pre-flop >120bb, obviously hugely opponent dependent though. Really don't shove into such a small pot, it's really, really bad. Looking at the results, I'll choose to believe you're the psychic one on this hand and made an awesome play. Without a rock solid read though, just make a standard raise rather than a shove. 68s: Just a random note, are you aware of how many bad spots you're getting into from the BB? If you see a free flop, be really willing to give up if you don't hit hard. Possible lines I like in this hand: Raise to 80c pre-flop, cbet any flop. Check pre-flop, planning to check-fold almost all flops. This flop hits wonderfully though so either check-raise or check-call + donk the turn. QQ: 3bet to $2.80-$3 pre-flop. Calling is really bad because it gives them too much equity for free. Yes they have paid some already, but your decision is either let them see a flop for no more cost or charge them, so charge them. Put it this way, you're OOP, don't do anything fancy OOP. Big hand=push chips in towards the middle as fast as they'll go in and still have some chance of getting action. Flop, do not slow play. Your hand is under represented. You want chips going in the middle. Do not get creative here. JJ: Getting 50bb stacks in is never a mistake here, you played it well. ATs: Your sizing seems a little random. Not necessarily a bad thing (although not really advisable either), just keep an eye on it if you don't have a really good reason for it. Check behind on the flop. If you think he'll call with A high and under pairs then you can value town this but it's a little thin. Check-call your way to the river, imo, value betting the river almost all of the time and sometimes the turn aswell. KK: Standard. well, I'd bet his full stack pre-flop just out of routine, but whatever, the effect is the same (just don't make a habbit of betting slightly less than full stack). JJ: Standard up until the turn where I think you can make it $6. River... eh, I hate this spot, I think folding is the right play though. KJo: Standard fold pre-flop. 45s: Fold pre-flop. 88: Pre-flop, great. Flop, don't mess around with your sizing like that, $2.50 would be better, imo. I think $3 makes your range way more defined as mid pocket pairs than $2.50 which keeps it really wide. I'm value towning this post flop, $2.50 on the flop (given your bet sizing in previous hands) and 2/3 pot on the turn, bet half pot and call a shove on the river. 78s: Fold the turn, imo. You have no fold equity, shoving is giving away chips. T7s: Fold pre-flop. Seriously re-think your play from the blinds. AA: Don't bet the turn and check the river. Check the turn to pot control, if you're not confident enough to bet the river after being called on the turn then checked to. Bet-call the flop, check the turn, value bet the river... seems a bit weak but that's the line I like most here. TT: I play it the same way. KK: I think you're being too creative pre-flop and on the flop, build a pot, if you raise pre-flop then you achieve two things: 1: Build some credibility for some light 3bets. 2: Improve the SPR for getting stacks in post-flop.

re: (Long)OK, is this awful variance or terrible play? poker i don't play small pairs from SB unless I can open raise or I can limp in. You're just a coin flip at best against a lot of hands. You're out of position, and you have like a 1 in 8 chance of flopping a set. I am not building a big pot unless I can see a flop for cheap. AND I have made a set. Now if someone called you out of position with 32 suited and takes down your AA with a flush AND then calls your AK 3 bet all in with A5 and hits a 5 (like what happened to me), then you can get mad.

Well I certainly didn't expect so many answers, and detailed at that. It certainly helps alot! I'm sorry about the duplicates, added each hand manually and not all at once so they slipped. Now I'll try to touch on the points you guys had in common about my game, and answer poker kid, he went the extra mile so I feel I should So defending the blinds : I might make a separate topic on this one, so I won't hi-jack my own thread haha, but I like to call PFR when I think I have good implied odds, i.e. I'll get paid off. And PT3 shows I would make quite a handsome profit from the BB - not including the amount of the blinds of course, but the profit is almost as big as the amount I paid for the BB, just 2 buy-ins or 200BB short, so I'm basically seeing the big blind for free (over almost 14K hands). Now, I am knew to all the statistics and all but I think that's a good result? Slow playing things on dangerous boards, that is a problem I always had and am working on it. It has gotten much better, actually. Open limping : looking in PT I've done it in 151 out of 14K hands, so just over 1%, and did lose a bit, almost 1 1/2 buy ins. I guess I should do it less. Will expand on that in a new thread... Call 3-bets : I guess you are right Belgo, when I put call any pre-flop raise under PT I see I am almost 10 buy-ins under, although over half are with QQ and AK, mostly bad beats, and other bad beats. But I should stop doing it with marginal hands obviously... Anyway, for the conclusion, overall from those hands, the way I am playing now (I know I need improving, just asking where I stand) do you think I can be a winner at 20 and 50 NL (planning to move back there soon) and lost mostly because of variance, or mostly because of bad play?
