What is your VPIP?

Curious as to what some peoples numbers are. I'm usually at about 15%-18% but play my best when I'm between 10%-12%

What type of games are you talking about here. That seems like pretty decent numbers for a full ring game, but that's to tight for a 6-max table. What do some of your other stats look like? Are you limping in with most of these hands or raising with them?

Overall VPIP while useful it is better to look at your stats by position when drilling down into you play.

You playing full-ring? 6-max? Tournaments? STT's? LO8? Badugi?

What are your other stats? The sum of all of your stats is far more telling than VPIP by itself.

I don't have poker tracking software yet. I just keep an eye on my VPIP when I play MTT's or SNG's; the ranges I gave are my experiences on how well I play. Not sure if others use this to track their play success or not.

honestly it's gonna be hard to evaluate your VPIP, or your play in general for that matter, without looking at it in the context of your other stats.

I'd recommend investing in either poker tracker or hold'em manager. It will really help your game in the long run. It will allow others, as well as yourself, evaluate your game and we can give you better feedback. You could also try making a video or two of a SNG that you play and post it into the videos section. For your MTT you could run your hand histories through a tournament condenser and post the relevant hands for someone to review also.

I want to buy HEM but I need to earn the cash to do so. I started with a $20 BR and I've decided I'm going to earn anything I put into poker with my play. I certainly understand that it would help to have it (no arguement lol) but I'll get it eventually...been making some nice MTT runs so I think it will eventually come.

A good VPIP for a SnG is totally different than a good VPIP for a heads up cash game. A VPIP with a maniac on your left is FAR different than having a nit on your left. IT DEPENDS! And you stat focused people don't even know that it depends, much less know what it depends on! Or even less, why.

Seriously, stop posting stat threads. Stop thinking about stats, stop looking at your stats, stop saying the word stats, and uninstall HEM from your computer. You are a newbie (you're posting in learning poker) and right now, those stats are false roads to improvement. Learn to read hands, analyze hands, learn the various theorems for how to play poker, and learn to exploit your opponents. Gradually add stats as you pull your head out of your ass.

You know, I took this post with a grain of salt. I respected your opinion and put some thought into it (especially being a somewhat contradictory thought)

And then you decided to post this Public Service Announcement: Stop looking at your stats. and pissed me off to no end. I'm sure some people will think I'm over reacting and that's fine but I really don't appreciate you making a post that basically mocks a thread that I start. When I talk to people, I suggest CC as a great community becuase people are helpful and don't bash on others. Unfortunately, I can't say that anymore.

Seriously, it should not matter what your vpip is. It's very dependant on who sits at your table, game structure, and payout structure.

If you're in a table full of nits, you loosen up your vpip/hand ranges and start stealing, bullying, etc.

If you're in a table full of spewtards and loose aggro fishes, you're gonna have to tighten up your hand ranges and ship your chips in when your equity is very good, and hopefully they pay you off.

If you're on bubble play with a huge stack, you're gonna have to loosen up and start bullying a lot.

If you're middle stack on bubble play of mtt and some jackass goes all-in against you, you're gonna have to tighten up lot of starting hands.

Lot of these situations and more get added up and then get averaged out. Just because some regular or some professional has vpip of 25% don't mean you gotta play 25% of the time.

Agree 100% with previous post. I just read Dusty Schmidt's book and he says most top pros play about 25% of hands. Well...that may work for them, but I find I cannot routinely be profitable playing that many hands at this stage of my poker development. I play Full-ring, and I'm most profitable when I'm running around 10-12% vpip and 8-10% pfr. But that's just me. I'm naturally a nit and at the levels I play at that is profitable for me. As I learn the game better and move up in stakes I hope to be able to expand my range and be profitable playing a wider range of hands, but for now if I play much over 15% of hands for a session it's usually a break-even session, at best. So I would say, play the % of hands you're comfortable playing and can be profitable playing. That is going to be different for different players.
