Starting from Scratch

Well I have finally done it. After months of playing freerolls to try and recreate the Ferguson Challenge after blowing out my account, I have freerolled to some minor success.

Last night I placed in the Daily Dollar freeroll (Super turbo madness) and then placed in the Daily Dollar for $3. I was playing the United States freeroll simultaneously and placed in that for $1. Then I bought into a sat for $2 and turned it into $5.50 and opted out. My BR is now at $7.45 after other various games.

I know it is nothing to brag about, but I feel good about beating out 7,300 players in the DD freeroll, then around 9,000 players in the actual DD, then another 7,450 in the US freeroll all in the same night.

Currently, I am grinding $1 9man SNGs and might take a stab at a MTT if the field is decent.

As always, if anyone has any advice to give, or just wants to chat, hit me up!

Stick to games you can afford. 1 dollar sngs are perfect, 1 dollar mtts are ok too. But if you don't cash in the first mtt you play I would suggest not playing another one untill you had a dollar more than the last time you tried. Statisticly you'll cash far less in mtts than sngs, for obvious reasons, so remember that sngs should be your bread and butter untill you build your br a bit more.

But don't be afraid to take a shot at a tourney every now and then either. One thing I would add is stay away from ring games untill you have at least 10 buy ins for the smallest limit.

Yeah by take a stab I meant a $1 tourney or something of that sort, definitely not something for my whole roll.

I think the best bet for you to roll your money is to use your $7 to play daily dollar.. whenever u ITM, u gain another entry fee for it. this gives u 7 shots of chance..

there's a $0.25 + $0.05 satellite to the daily dollar. right now you got over 20 buyins for these. so i'd stick with these for awhile. and also use these to win entry into the daily dollar ofcoarse. i'd try to keep a minimum of $7.50 in the BR but if you got to $9.50 take a shot at the $2 SNG you played those are a good deal(much better than the $1.20 sngs and even the $2.25s). if you make it to $40+ i'd play just the $2 ones until you got 20-25 buyins for the $5.50s SNGs. but if you wanted to play 2nl with the $40 it should be enough. good luck.

Deposit, follow bankroll management principles, start winning actual money. Right now, you're risk of going busto is kinda large.

I've been on more or less the same path; I ran my account down to under a dollar and finally came to the conclusion that my skills were imaginary. I started playing freerolls and micro buy-in MTTs, and over two years have built a bankroll of $380. The WSOP freerolls that Full Tilt runs every summer have helped a lot.

You can do this, but it's a serious grind. You become very attached to those freeroll winnings, they're hard to come by. I do it for amusement; it's not a good way to build a roll. Take c9h13no3's advice, make a deposit.

Keep grinding and studying the game. Don't stop learning about the game after some success. I made that mistake and did not use proper bankroll management and lost down to $0. Got a decent bank and plan to play it slow and steady. X

I am working at building my bank roll back up and enjoy playing the $1 & $2. I do fine there. It's usually when I play too high stakes at cash tables or "try to get even for the session" that I screw up, get impatient, and quickly lose what I work so hard to gain.

Micro level SnG's (especally the $1/90 player) pay at a good percentage. The 90 player at FTP pays the top 20%. That's better than most anything else. You won't get rich, but you can slowly build a roll...or slowly lose one like me!!!

yeah the 90man Sng $1 is good. but it take more than 4 hours before u can see the money... if u gonna grind that, i advice to do at mass tabling.. so you will find your hourly rate is better.. if not, get a job...

i usually start with 2.00 then cash table to 2.25(very easy)
play a 6man sng (always cash)
or a 2.25 turbo tourney or 45 mans(if i cash its big or nothing)
then from ther i play the 2.25's untill 30 then move to $5
bad br manegmant but works for me to build up to 70 then use normal
rules

re: Starting from Scratch poker

I too am trying to build from freerolls and see how far I can go. I seem to do pretty well at the 1c/2c ring games but it takes forever to win anything. When I move to a 5c/10c ring game my br goes south quick. Don't know if it is just due to more aggressive play that makes me fold or i just hit bad streaks whenever i move up.

I have done exactly what you are describing here. I actually cashed a couple of times and went bust and had to start over so don't get discouraged. I have turned my freeroll earnings into almost $1000! So just keep going. Rome wasn't built in a day so remember, you are probably going to have to just really stick with Bankroll management and you will do well.
