strange bets

Can anyone tell me why people bet weird bets like 101 or 66. it is so annoying.

One of the reasons, imo, is that it makes the bet look larger than it is. a bet of 999 has a huge stack of chips but 1000 is just one chip.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say it's because it annoys and/or confuses people.

lol, when i play tournaments (rarely nowadays) i ALWAYS bet stupid amounts like 222 or 144 etc. Adds a little interest to the game, pisses off your opponents, makes the stack look big (maybe it is just me, but i like seeing lots of chips, even if the amount isn't that much), screws with ppl's minds etc.

I use it sometimes. It makes people less likely to call when you don't really want to. Also makes the bet look much bigger than it is. Basically, as was said earlier, to confuse people.

if im making a bet around the 4000-5000 range ill bet 4444 because my lucky number is 4... just supersticion (sp?) for me.

vcpoker used to(they may still have?) the option of betting part of 1 chip, ie 100.49 and it used to look such a big bet. It makes the opponent think for a second, meanwhile, his timer's running down!
It's all pyschological

This and sometimes as the blinds climb you might not want to commit a full 3 or 4 bb to a raise. Some opponents might not even be able to work out what you're raising to.

I've always wondered about that. I can see how it might confuse some. All you have to do is look at the call button and it says what the bet is. May have to try that sometime.

I too believe it's to confuse people and involves superstition. I've noticed that these people and those who just make the same "normal" hefty raise will do it over and over again as though they believe, "If it worked once, it will work every time", until someone takes them down.

I have often bet odd bets like this many times too like said before make my bet seem larger. Some times I just want to either even out my chips remaining. I have even heard that this is a way to foil anyone using a bot. It supposedly can throw off the bot by not using conventional bettng.

i've never even thought of doing that, but i may try it sometime, though i really like the relaxation of playing poker so makes me kinda lazy i guess on thinking too much lol betting odd amounts would require too much thought

I do it with 99 units sometimes -- less then I used too because it looks bigger then $1. This has 2 effects:

I may do this when I have the nuts. Why not bet $1 instead of 99 cents because 99 cents is bigger thus I want you to fold but I realize you realize this and thus I want you to call.

It's called reverse psychology. By the same token I may really want you to fold. Some people bet odd amounts when they are on a bluff or have the nuts to setup patterns that appear non-random that they will turn and make them random.

Sometimes it's to even a stack, or someone grabs the scroll bar and just scrolls and clicks bet without evening the number out (too lazy to move from mouse to keyboard).

Wow! If that minor occurance "annoys" you so much, I think you've picked the wrong game as your hobby. Poker has plenty of other things about it that are WAY more annoying than that.

I'm guilty of making strange bets. If the flop is something like 347 I will bet out 347 especially if I was going to bet something in the 300-400 range anyway. Why not bet 347? Its fun and u might get a curious caller to call you down.

sometimes I bet odd number of chips to psyche people out and it nearly always works. I love leaving people with just 1 chip.

THat idea was no use to me.

The blinds were 5 and 10 thousand and the flop came over 234...

Next hand I had pocket 2s and it checked down to the river so I typed in the board as it read. 9 5 3 6 4...

Blew my entire stack when I was called...

i pay no attention so it wont work to confuse me if i want to call i will if its 600 or 603 or 588. There is too much thinking involved if you think this will confuse someone who knows anything about poker, but thanks for the tip now i know someone is trying to confuse me i just thought they were being weird.

I would not recommend doing this. Unless you are very careful to do it every time, you may be exploitable.

I bet odd amounts because I want to even out my stack. If I have 1547 I will bet 47 leaving me with 1500. Sort of like a neat freak with chips.
