I also am torn regarding this question, sometimes you just want to show those aces, or when in the big blind with 7 2 off and everybody folds. I find myself showing probably more often than I should as I just like to show off after a hand..
Also as I have seen some others mention I also show in order to influence the other players next move, if I make a big raise with a premieum hand and then show, I may make a similar raise with rags and hope they all think I was dumb to show I bet big with the nuts and watch the table fol;d.

I always to show my cards, but when to bluff and when he opened a good hand to see that it was not stealing. But a great player once told me not to do show. At first I did not think much about it, but thinking a little sense because poker is a game of information and when we show valuable information. Some do show as a strategy, especially if they make a lantern and speculate a possible tilt rival.
But I remember several good players finally advised me not to do the show, so I'm not a great player basing on the advice of those who recommend if they never do show

It is a game of INCOMPLETE information. Showing your hand completes the information for your opponent. Why would you want to do that?

Ohhh... You think by showing it allows you to bluff later? Well then congratulations - you are now officially results oriented instead of making good decisions. You think all that matters is the final results of the hand. By showing your hand you didn't just show the winning hand - you showed how you play preflop, flop, turn and probably even river. Do that a couple times and you are screwing yourself.

Very peculiar how pros sometimes show their hands isn't it.

Don't be so narrow minded on it. There are times that it is beneficial to show your hand.

Makes no sense

Not a good idea to show your hand. It just gives other players at the table how you play.

Maybe, if you buy a pot, it "may" be a good idea to show. But, even that is doubtful.

I took this off Google:

The problem with showing cards when you have them is that people then assume that the next time you don’t show you didn’t have it. And when you want them to think you had it the next time you feel obligated to show your hand again. If you start showing people your cards all the time they are going to figure out the way that you play long before you figure out the way they play. I really believe that there is no good time to show your cards. Some people like to show to put people on tilt. Although it does work sometimes, it will sometimes make a poor player leave the table. It also gives a lot of information about when you will bluff, and how far you are willing to bluff. I am more then happy to let everyone else do that move. The only thing I will do sometimes and only in live games is the, show one person on accident, move. When I muck the hand I will make sure that the bottom card is tilted up just enough for the person to see, but nobody else can request to see the hand because I didn’t intentionally show. The only other way you should show a hand is to throw it in the much in a way that it flips over. That way people don’t assume that you are going to flip your next hand over. Over all though I would make it a rule to never show your hand unless someone pays to see them. That is, after all, the way you make money.

Majority of the live players in casinos are ****ing awful. They don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to poker. Therefore, they cling to the information they have recieved.

It is profitable to show your hand to fish. I think people who say don't ever show haven't played in that casino dynamic where it is profitable to do so. A good player gets a look at one hand, a tiny sample of your playing style, while the fish gets hooked on that small bit of information you have given him. That sets up a meta game that they are unaware of.

You show one hand and it screws up your game? Maybe consider the number of hands you show at showdown in comparison. I'm sure your competent opponents will take more info from those.

Yes Every now and again

Every now and again not to often and really think about what you are going to show. Pay attention to signs like are people calling you down or folding away really easy. if they are calling you down bet big on a really good hand maybe when you have the nuts and your big bet scared every one show that one. Then that leaves us with people folding out easy try to take the lowest hand and get every one to fold before river or at river and show them the nasty bluff this always gets people thinking and usually throws them off just enough too take advantage of there confusion.

i love to show my cards after an excellent pure bluff, especially if they were the aggressor the whole way through the hand and I have something like a 2 4 offsuit. and like you said, i do it in such a way that i can bet in a similar manner with excellent holdings and they will be inclioned to call. Im sure some people hate playing against me

If i am deep into a tournament ft or like less than 20 players i might show a couple bluffs just to get people to think im bullshitting a lot. Then tighten up a little bit get into a hand with those same players with good hand and try to get them to ship it. That is the only place i will show. Usually showing has no merit earl on in tourneys because most the players are not keeping track and you get moved to tables a lot.

I don't think I ever show bluffs. I usually show when I have the nuts or a strong hand, but not often. When I do show it's because I sometimes play with a lot of LAGs that love to call ALL my hands and I play a TAG style. I have people whining say that I raise to much or bet too much and I get tired of hearing them complaining so I'll show them pocket aces and then they will shut up. I could mute the chat, but I love reading the chat.

If everyone at the table respects my hand range and I'm in "heater mode" I'll show all my premium hands so they know I'm not BSing them. Then when I get 10 9 suited or something I'll raise the same amount and then start bluffing. If I'm playing my last hand for the day and I push someone off the pot; I usually show my last hand and leave. That way they can think about my hand for the rest of the day :D

Showing your hand can mess with their game plans at time so they don't know when you have the nuts or not

As I said previously, I never show a bluff. While I don't show bluffs, I may occasionally fold and show a strong hand to let my opponents know that I'm not getting involved in pots with weak hands. I see responses from a lot of players that say that they will never show any hand for any reason. I can't say that I see anything wrong with that thinking. At the same time, I can't really fault the players that say they will sometimes show a bluff before tightening up, or show one or two strong hands, before opening their game up. In fact, I heard a very interesting fact just the other day. During the cold war, more than half of the CIA's budget was spent not on gathering information, but disseminating disinformation. They believed that one of the most effective ways of safeguarding information was to spread false information. Think about that.

I'm not really going to get too deep. The point is this. Different strategies work for different people depending on their personality and style of play. The key thing is that you always have a plan, that you're not just showing hands for no reason. There should be no "just because" at the poker table. There should be thought and reasoning in everything that you do. That is what I see in most of the responses in this thread. Whether you show or not, the key is to only let them see what you want them to see.

unless it is an advertising play, Inever show my cards for the reasons so many have outlined. The one excpetion and it is a rare is when I know the other player takes notes and I want to mis-direct. -

I never showed my cards, because poker is a game of information. when we gain more?
When we have more information the adversary.

When it's about me I prefer to sometimes if I win like 3 bluff hands in short period of time, then I love to show'em that im bluffing. So on next few hands they'll be more suspicious about me and when I'll hit a big hand they possibly would pay me big time.
