BR idiocy I had around $300 and then took 2nd then 1st in a couple of rush on demand tourneys. I was flying high with a little over 800. I then decided to take a shot at the 200 nl rush cash games. I figured that if I lose it I'm still up 300 making it a very good day for me. I didn't lose. I went up to 1200. Then capped at 1800. I then took a hit running a semi-bluff. Then took a $500 hit on a runner runner suck out. Now I'm down under 1100 and feeling like I have to get back up so I start playing stupidly. Posts: 10 hit on a runner runner suck out. Now I'm down under 1100 and feeling like I have to get back up so I start playing stupidly. Busto! I'm now playing 2nl and 5nl rush working my way back to a place where I can go play real poker. I'm crushing the games but crushing for a dollar a table sucks. Wish me luck. Moral? Fine, take a shot if that's in your nature. But if you start losing, STOP!! Protect your new and improved BR and go back to stakes where you can easily overcome variance. Where one bad suck out doesn't really hurt. Or.....end up playing me at the micros.

Agreed. The biggest thing was losing a third of my new BR on one hand. Then I started trying to get back to that amount by playing outside of my BR some more. When I lost that hand I still had close to $1100. An $800 profit still. I should have gone back down in stakes and played where doing the right thing and it not working out didn't hurt so badly. Instead I tried too hard to go back up by taking too many chances and killing my game. I should have quit for a while and then when I came back I easily could have gone back down even to 25nl and been able to play. I would have gone back up, albeit more slowly, and I still would have had my new BR. I messed up by staying where I was, and tilted at that.

Agreed, while it's nice to take a shot at the next limit up from time to time, it can obviously mess up your bankroll if it all goes horribly wrong. Takes a lot of discipline to observe good bankroll management and also to walk away at the right moment.

URGENT TRUST ME from experience stop this right now, this may sound strange but the worst thing that ever happened to me was winning $1000 in the space of 30 minutes in one night. I had just started in poker I sat down at a $15/30 fixed limit holdem table with $150 i think it was i kept been delt monsters and hitting flops hard. it was insane it was sick. I did not know how lucky i was running i thought it could happen again i lost it. I kept trying for it again and i lost thousands. this has happened to many gamblers. there is no such thing as a free lunch sure you hear stories of guys that do it but you also hear stories of guys who win the lottery and i can assure you a lot more people lose that then win it. your highly likely to go broke doing this and then chase it and lose a lot lot more. after finding myself over drawn by several hundred at christmas wondering where $5000 had gone which i had worked hard for enduring hell over a year and half, i decided there and then not to quit poker but to behave and take it seriously to use proper bank roll management to study the game to make it happen for me. since then I have won all this back and a lot more and payed my whole way through uni with it. Poker for me so far has been like a war in the trenches slowly taking a few inches at a time. I have steadily won a weeks wages consistently then lost a bit and taken a step back for every two steps forward gradually progressing but seeming like a grind and then getting big scores from tournaments every now and then. since i took it seriously and took a disciplined approach it has been happening for me. and I know it will continue to do so. you need to work properly for it though it takes discipline and effort and grind nothing in life worth having is easy it won't come easy your going to have bad days and grinds but if your determined and make the effort and fight it out and study the game and think about it and stick to proper bank roll management it will definitely happen for you. and it will be worth it. if you do what your doing at the moment though youll lose a heck of a lot and really regret it. I speak from experience.

I don't understand why you're playing tables where a single buyin is your entire BR. That's a recipe for disaster. Poker sites love drawing in suckers like you by letting you win early and then taking it away and having you chase, chase, chase until you're bankrupt and living in a cardboard box. Go play tables where you have 25-100 buyins, or just donate your bankroll to charity.

The reason people win big and then lose it all is that they are not practicing proper bankroll management, plain and simple. Have you ever lost your entire stack at $10NL when your AA vs KK and villain spikes his King ? Now imagine that at $1000NL and you have your whole bankroll on the table. It's variance, nothing more, nothing less - which is why you should only risk a percentage of your roll at a time. |

Br is an abstract thing, one mans buy-in is anothers 100 buy-ins but untill you have practiced BRM in some form poker is not for you. Could be terrible BRM but it will still be BRM. By that I mean keep playing and deposit all you can, that is truely how to play poker.......

The reason people get busto playing outside their bankroll is because, well duh, they played outside their bankroll. When you were reading the rigged thread did you by any chance read all of the responses from experienced members explaining that, in fact, their is no evidence of rigging? Maybe Stu can explain it to you so that you understand. |

At least you didn't tilt off all your money. Calm down. You did right by going back to micros, where you feel comfortable. The whole point of BRM is that it protects your bankroll from variance -- and yourself. But you have to stick to it. OK. So you lost more than you started with, but you still have a lot more than you started with. Patience!!! If you try to build a roll fast, mostly you are likely to lose your roll fast. So just plan on building it slowly, at a level where the hits don't bother you all that much.

You have to laugh at the rigged megathread being sited as incontrovertible evidence. (Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean the Action Flop isn't always aimed against me). The rigged thread was a good place to let of steam, (like the bad beat thread), until it digressed into dinosaurs and other off topic subjects.
