Two of poker’s top high stakes pros, Nick Schulman and David Peters, won separate events at the Triton Super High Roller Series at Landing Casino in Jeju, South Korea — with Schulman the latest to take down a short-deck event, and Peters booking a seven-figure score.

With Justin Bonomo sitting this series out, other players have an opportunity to win one, or more, high roller events.

Intro to Short-Deck Poker

Playing short-deck poker for the first time, Schulman took down the HKD $100,000 ($12,742 USD) No-Limit Hold’em Short-Deck Ante Only event for $271,975, and inched closer to the $11 million lifetime live tournament mark.

The poker commentator and former pool shark admitted he learned basic strategy right before entering the tournament but still defeated some experienced Asian pros who regularly play short-deck poker in Macau.

Short-Deck Ante Only Final Table Results

1 Nick Schulman (USA) $271,975
2 Kenneth Lee (Malaysia) $168,072
3 Hing Chow (Malaysia) $111,440
4 Ben Lamb (USA) $78,888
5 Foo Ming (Malaysia) $59,391
6 Chin Lim (Malaysia) $47,378
7 Seng Leow (Malaysia) $39,926

Lamb, another top high roller and a two-time WSOP Main Event final tablist, was also playing in his first short-deck tournament. Not bad for a couple of first-timers.

“Always really grateful for a win,” Schulman said after taking his winner’s photo. “I’ve been going at it a long time, and I’ve had my share of ups and downs, so I am used to the swings. Grabbing a win feels great. I am very happy and thankful for it.”

7-Figure 6-Max Champion

David Peters also flew overseas to Asia to crush the high roller series. The 2016 GPI Player of the Year took down the HKH $500,000 ($63,712 USD) No-Limit Hold’em 6-Max event, a non-short-deck tournament, for $1,158,058.

On the final hand of the tournament, he set a trap on the river with a straight against Steve O’Dwyer, who was holding top-pair. O’Dwyer shoved all-in and Peters instantly called to finish off an exciting heads-up match between two of the winningest players in poker history (Peters remains at 14th and O’Dwyer moves up to 11th).

There are three remaining events on the Triton Super High Roller Series schedule, including the HKD $2 million ($254,850 USD) Main Event which begins on Aug. 1.
