Crypto prices might be crashing, but the poker world is embracing decentralization like never before. Following last week’s $1.8 million pot on CoinPoker, StormX is raising the stakes with a new event.

The StormX Charity Invitational is the crypto exchange’s first event with its new partner, PokerGo. The action begins on March 3 at the PokerGo Studio in Las Vegas, and it will feature a stellar line-up of stars. On the guestlist are NASCAR’s Landon Cassill, as well as NBA stars Paul Pierce and Michael Carter-Williams. They’ll be joined by a cast of celebrities, crypto influencers, and a team of poker pros, including Tom Dwan and Maria Ho.

Invited guests will pay $5,000 to play and there will be an optional rebuy for an additional $5,000. The organizers expect to generate a prize pool of at least $500,000, a portion of which will go to charities in Miami, including initiatives aimed at improving crypto literacy among the masses.

The tournament will be shown on StormX, as well as on YouTube, and should offer poker fans a chance to enjoy some light entertainment. More significantly, however, is the impact the tournament will have on the connection between the poker and crypto communities.

Cryptocurrencies and their associated technology have been gaining more of a foothold in the poker world over the last 12 months with the 2021 launch of sites like Virtue Poker, a crypto gaming site backed by Phil Ivey. Resorts World Las Vegas, meanwhile, inked a deal with Gemini last year so that visitors can use crypto tokens to make onsite non-gambling purchases. Triton joined the party in October by partnering with Kraken before PokerGo followed suit and linked up with StormX earlier this month.

Finally, the high-stakes action on CoinPoker hasn’t gone unnoticed in the last two weeks. Helped by the presence of Tony G and King’s Resort owner Leon Tsoukernik , the crypto poker games have produced some of the biggest pots in history.

Potential innovations abound as crypto experts play poker

Therefore, the StormX Charity Invitational is much more than a celebrity poker tournament. Indeed, the list of entrants features dozens of important figures from the crypto space, including Charlie Lee, the creator of Litecoin along with other technology leaders. While these people might not be household names in poker, they form the foundations of the crypto community and will likely be important players in driving the future of crypto-based poker innovation.
