Hot Year for Boeree’s Boyfriend

Over the weekend, the PokerStars Championship Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller, a tournament that attracted 67 players (and accounted for 19 re-entries) saw Team PokerStars Pro Igor Kurganov come out on top after striking a heads-up deal with Poland’s Bartlomiej Machon, who was making his high roller debut.

“Let me paraphrase for him,” Kurganov’s fellow Team Pro and girlfriend, Liv Boeree, weighed in during his post-victory interview. “He’s very happy. He’s very emotional.”

Kurganov, who also won a bracelet alongside Boeree this past summer, added €1,084,100 ($1,273,372) to his lead atop Russia’s all-time money list. He got off to a hot start at the final table and pulled out to a quick chip lead. He proceeded to steamroll the final table, and after striking a deal heads up, he finished things off when holding the Q♣Q♦ against Machon’s Q♥J♥.

It marked the 12th win of Kurganov’s career and his third-largest cash behind his $1,425,874 win in the 2012 EPT Grand Final €25KHigh Roller and $1,559,373 for placing third in the 2014 EPT Grand Final €100K Super High Roller.

Career-High for Chidwick

On Tuesday, the PokerStars Championship Barcelona hosted a €25,500 Single-Day High Roller, a tournament that drew 112 total entries and created a €2,744,00 prize pool. It took 14 hours for a winner to emerge, and that was well-known poker pro Stephen Chidwick, who took down a career-high €690,400 ($813,144) prize.

In heads-up play, Chidwick, who got married earlier this month, squared off against Bryn Kenney, who was fresh off finishing runner-up in the 2017 SHRPO $10,000 NLHE event.

In what was the final hand of the tournament, blinds were 60k/120k/20k when Kenney moved all-in for his last 2.1 million holding 3♣3♥. Chidwick called with 8♣8♠. The board ran out a clean K♣J♦2♦7♦2♠ and Kenney had to settle for another second-place finish and a €466,500 ($549,438) consolation prize.

Some others to cash the event included Erik Seidel (11th for $66,251), Byron Kaverman (15th for $53,295), and Koray Aldemir (17th for $50,739).
