When I first started playing tournaments, I would only play turbos and hypers as I didn't have the patience for long and slow tournaments. I'd get too bored and start to play badly or punt my chips on purpose.
Thankfully, that has since changed as I've been playing poker for longer now. Now, I play more 'normal' speed tournaments, purely because there are more of them to play, but I still love playing turbos and hypers as well.
Even though the pace of play doesn't bother me anymore, my preferred tournaments are probably just about hypers. The possibility of turning a small amount of money into a decent amount in a very small time frame is very appealing. Attached is a tournament I played a couple years ago. Turned $2.20 into $164 in under 2 hours.
You can also learn a hell of a lot from playing hypers and turbos as well which you can bring with you into the normal or slower paced MTTs. The main things I learnt are people's ranges at different stages but mainly how to play really effectively with a shortstack. Once you're ITM of a hyper, if you have over 20BB you have TOOOOONS. Even having around 10BB isn't really a worry in a hyper. In the normal MTTs, a lot of people will get to around 15BB and just shove or fold. Doing it that way, you're maximising the risk of busting and also minimizing the chance of gaining chips. Limping in with a small stack won't be recommended by most people but once you've got a lot of experience playing turbos and hypers, it's a strategy you can definitely take across with you and can be very effective 20210104_061020.jpg
