i lost my last bankroll that i had built up from $40 to $400, through playing kind of badly and poor br management. i managed to come 2nd/1000 odd with the free tickets i got from signing up on 888 poker so i have like $130 in my account from no deposit on that.
after a couple of days off i want to play on pokerstars again as i am getting the itch. but i am not sure how much i should deposit? i don't want to go into exact figures but i have a few k £'s saved up. the most i have ever deposited on online site is like £100 or $100 can't remember haha. i don't really fancy playing the $0.50 sng's again AT ALL, or any sng's pretty much except for the $4.50 non turbos which i seemed to be decent at, only played about 6 and final tabled 2 i think. when i played in the $2.50 ones i just felt that if i did not get a hand like 9's+ or AQ+ in the first 10 mins or so then i was pretty much screwed as i would just have to all in with rags. and the variance seemed alot higher in these than the aforementioned $4.50 ones.
i also really liked playing in around the $5.00 mtt's. so anyway, how much should my br be for these? bearing in mind i am a student but i worked for a year and haven't used basically any of my saving so don't mind using some if people think it is a good idea to deposit a certain amount as opposed for trying to get a small deposit up by playing micro sng's. okay thanks! please reply asap as i need to go the bank before 5- which is 1.5 hours hahaha.

If you want to play just the $4.50s and $5 MTTs I would say you'd need to deposit at least $250. I would recommend mixing in some lower buyin MTTs though, like $1-$5s because you will gain alot of experience and learn while not risking as much.

Most players recommend ~100 buyins for MTTs. I myself use ~50 but I can either redeposit if I need to or else move down in stakes.

this ^ (be prepared to re-deposit at some point)

Try to stick to one game (one format, if possible).
Consider it all 'experience'.

On Pokerstars, the $4 buyin tourneys, & $2.50, $2.70 & $5's, all play pretty much the same.

I'm not sure how much experience you have playing poker (mtt's, etc.) but 'if' I were you, I'd put some time aside to focuz on playing STT/SNG 'reg'. speed 'micros' for awhile. Then I'd move to the 18man & 27mans (like I mentioned in another thread of your's). This is 'if' you're hoping to build a bankroll.

The thing with solely playing MTT's, you could be a very good, experienced player and still go for a longggg stretch without a decent cash (or you could be like me & place 2nd in the very first one you ever played online, lol).

To check out what tourneys to play, be sure to set your lobby filters. Then you won't have to sift through all the crap in the lobby.

I say if you cannot make $10 last you a month then you shouldnt be playing.

Why not build your bankroll instead of "adding it".

I suppose it depends on how much you can afford to lose. My goal has been mainly to improve my game which I find comes best in tournament play. The rif raf are all gone halfway through, and you get some decent games.

You obviously have some skills, so why not hone them playing games you can afford to lose. I am not saying that as an insult. I've had paydays like $240 for the $4 SNG, and won tickets in hubble, etc.

Twice I've turned hubble tickets into real money and got it up over $10. So I got $10 BR starting from a freeroll. (sleeveless j on PS).

I guess my point is that no matter what my BR is I am in the money at least 12% of the time according to stats (old stats soon). I still end up needing to reinvest once in a while. I think you need to be able to turn $10 into $100 before you can turn $100 into $1000.

So in my opinion start with $10/month.

1 trick I use to curb losing is that if I don't make a bubble I cannot play anymore RM tourneys that day. I have a bad habit of playing a $3.50 SNG to recoup my loss from a $1 SNG.

Good luck anyways, and rem. I am addressing this comment also at anyone who is wanting to have BR on ps.

2 posts suggest $250 for those $4.50 games, that's only 50 buy-ins, I'll suggest $500 with a full 100 buy-ins so that you really put that scared money aspect that much further out of your mind.

i think you should deposit at least $250 and go from there if you have money! and the amount depends in what you are ready to deposit. But let me tell you something, on 888 Poker, the number of players compared with pokertstars are really low and it means that you will find a lot of fish players, crazy player and a lot of players that i can´t even put in a category! So, avoid that players means that you can play low stacks not micro stacks! keep this things in mind before decide anything, as far as i can say, will be a good experience play micro stacks if you find a way to make money on that level of game, probably you will develop agood skills. But if you enter on a tilt mode, can be dangerous. :) best of luck to you!

Maybe 100 buy-ins are not enough, the fields on PokerStars are so big, but ok - these are soft (mine) fields. Mix in some (non turbo) 180mans and satellites (where every 5th player wins a prize) as variance reducers.

Always plan and play to win but at the same time only put in what you are willing to lose. That being said put in your max especially if there is and bonus for deposit/reload.

I did say minimum 50 buyins. But yeah, 100 buyins is a good approach if you can afford it and if you find yourself losing, just move down in stakes.

You can always deposit small amounts at a time but have an overall amount you are prepared to play with. You dont have to have your whole bankroll online.Just in case !!

Guy is asking about Stars, which means he is not US, where this would not really work because of ugly deposit delays.

Is there any current method of depositing which has no delay for ROW players?

There's no delay at all depositing to any sites I play on. I use visa or neteller. Instant cash outs too if you use Neteller or 3 working days to Visa. These times are for PokerStars, some other sites take a little longer but not too much.

First of all,
If you're looking to play mtt's, don't start out with stt's/sng's like suggested above, why? simple: playing 9man's will only teach you how to play 9man's, and the same goes for 18/27 man's.
The 45/180 man's are a great way to start out tho,

Second,
I asume you are not a very experienced player, so I think 500$ is not enough to play 5.50's

I've learned this BRM when I tried out mtt's, I don;t remember where I found it, but I've saved it in a word document:
$416 - $3.25 45-man
$440 - $2.20 MTTs, $2.20 180-man
$495 - $3.30 90-man
$832 - $6.50 45-man
$880 - $4.40 MTT, $4.40 180-man
$1100 - $5.50 MTTs

As you see I used 200 BI´s for the stakes I was playing at )talking about mtt´s', I highly recommend sticking to this unless you are willing to re-deposit.

Btw,
I got told the best way to start out is play 45 man's, (the turbo's) to get a basic understanding of ICM and p/f ranges, They are a very good way to build your roll.

Anyway, good luck.

30-50 dollars is a decent amount to start with if your careful and play smart it should last a couple of months if you micro grind

This is really bad advice imo, you can't trust on keeping this roll playing 1-5 $ games

OP apparently deposited $500 immediately after posting first post but didn't bother reporting it here.
Instead he told us in one of his many other threads on the same subject

yeah sorry i have been off this for a bit. i did indeed just deposit $500, but i have switched to cash games which i am making a slight profit at most sessions- although tbh i am not enjoying them nearly as much so i am very tempted to go back to mtt's with hopefully more success.
