Not sure if this is standard tournament rule but seems strange -

Saturday I went to Seneca Niagara to play the $225 NL Holdem tournament - I got there and I ran over to the poker room and registered around an hour before the tournament. I went to kill time and sat down ad the bar to play some video poker. Time went by quick and before I knew it I was around 15 mins late. I prefer waiting for a few rounds to sit down anyways so I wasn't too concerned.

By the time I got over there the 2nd round was just ending and when I sat down I noticed that they were blinding me since the beginning of the tournament. Meanwhile, the players that registered late were sitting down with their whole stack.

I asked the tournament director and apparently, that is their policy - I find it strange that they would basically punish early registers? Has anyone else experienced this?

it varies from casino to casino, but i think this is a standard practice. Basically it would be the same if you played one hand and got up and left for a couple rounds since you already registered, while late regers just bought in

If you think about it, they have to do it that way.

All the pre-registrations are assigned seats.

There has to be an official tournament start time without everyone turning up randomly for the first hour, or perhaps even day.

There can't be some tables full whilst others could be just playing headsup.

Even if you wanted the late regers to be similarly penalised it couldn't be implemented because each table plays at a different rate.

It is not unusual, All Online tournaments with Late Registration do exactly the same thing to sitouts and late regers.

You make some very good points and the more I think about it, it makes sense.

In the future, if they are not giving an early reg bonus, I wont be registering till I sit down - live and learn
