This is a discussion on Do You Prefer 6-Max or 8-Max (Tournaments) within the online poker forums, in the Tournament Poker section; In a poker tournament where do you play better at tables of 6 or tables of 8?
And where are strategies most useful?
8 and 9 max, rarely play 6 max, if I do, mostly CGs. Obviously you have more action on a 6 max, if it counts for you, for me it is a disadvantage as well, as I can't play, focus for the same number of tables like in 8,9max.
You can have 'strategies' on any, not important what you mean exactly. For that, what and how I prefer to play, the 8,9 max is more suitable.

I prefer to play 9 person, especially in SNGs due to a larger payout but have had success with 6 man tournaments as well. It depends if you want to be patient or have more action. I think the smaller tables also benefit a skillful player to an event greater extent.
I am a tight player so I prefer 8 max tournaments. In 6 max tournaments, we need to open wider and fight for the pot so it's more risky than normal.

I prefer the 8. What is exciting for me, that after trying some 8 players sessions (cause they are rare and usually hold as events) I can definitely feel the difference between the 8 and the 9 player tables. Its so much easier and clearer to absolve your moves when theres only 1 person less then a regular.
Obviously 6-4-3-2 tables requires more agressivity and ability to play fast but effective poker.
Maybe six is a halfway between those formats, cause many attributes can be experienced that both can lap the 8-9 or the 4-2 formats.
So most of the times I would choose the eight format, but my mood and the MTTs will tell me 'what to play today'.
