Freerolls are good in the sense that you can play in the tournament without investing money, of course there is a lot of variance and you need to play for several hours to get into the prizes, but a big payout is only in top3. So think about whether it is worth participating in them.

Hi all!

I like freerolls, they are an interesting way to start from scratch, learn about poker and all its aspects (people, software, game times and many others) Have fun for a while and maybe win some money. The best in my opinion are the CC there is a good level of poker.
Cheers

Frustrated with poker because of freerolls? Those who want to make money quickly will not get it, but playing and gaining experience is a pleasure

Freerolls is for fun you can't expect to win everything. It's fun to crack aces with a 7 2 and the only place where it does not cost you anything to see that is a freeroll. GL & HF

I used to play on Facebook and other free platforms, for fun money, Doing pretty good and winning lots of points. When I started on pokerstars the fun money games were good and they gave you 1,000 chips to get you started and you could buy into games for as little as 100, and if you went bust they would re-stack you for another 1,000 chips so you never really lost.
I built my initial stack to over 650,000 in a few months and then started in the Free-rolls for real money and boy was I shocked!
The game play was so different and it took me a while before I made the money in one, I remember my very first cash was 32 cents and I was so excited about it, I took a screen print and was going to frame it (haha)!
I never did but from that 32 cents I built a bank-roll of over $200 and it is still growing, today it stands at over $300 and even though I did leave on-line games for Live games I never withdrew any cash because to me it is virtual money and never was mine anyway so if the site went bust I was losing nothing.
What you never had, you cannot lose.
I returned to on-line poker due to this Covid Pandemic because I missed playing the game with all the pubs and Casino's shut, and I realised why I play the free-rolls even today.
You have to understand, It's not the money that matters it's the taking part that is so important. When I was a kid I loved football, cricket, tennis and all the other sports you see on T.V. because I could and would play them at every opportunity. As I grew older and perhaps wiser I drifted away from these type of sports because I didn't have the Stamina so drifted into more pub games like Darts, Snooker, Pool etc I even Captained a Pool Team for a while. I also ran a poker game at my local Pub. So for me it has never been about the money, It has always been the taking part in something and the Pride I feel when I win.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

is there any proof that freerolls are diffrent in play then the 0.1-3 $ tournaments buyins? or just experiance? I always think that if you play for less then 10 $ probablyu you didnt care about the result. just an opinion cuz i didnt play anything beyound 5 $ entry fee.

Back when I first started playing Freeroll poker was the only way I could build a bankroll.
I had no way to deposit funds so had no choice, also back then people thought if you were a poker player you were some gambling addict and wanted to stage an intervention. So I would tell them that I am playing with free money that I won and that I had never made a deposit so it made them feel different about it.

Now I play freerolls with CardsChat not because I need the money but because I want to sharpen my skills as well as climb the leaderboards and maybe even win some free swag.

1st of all not all free rolls are created equally. There are Turbo and Hyper Turbo freerolls where you have little choice but to take chances you normally would not. There are regular timed free rolls where you can play a normal style of tournament poker. I find that the Cards Chat freerolls are actually very difficult to break into the money due to the fact that most of the players are good players that play tight, (as in 20% or less VPIP) which is unheard of in pretty much all other types of free rolls.

remember as your field gets larger the variance goes up and up and up. you can easily go 250 freerolls with out a major cash. plus, the structures are usually very fast and the stacks low. which also ups the variance.

Agree 100%

That kind of depends, what you mean by "doing well". You are not going to cash in every tournament, you play, so failing to cash in some freerolls does indeed not make you a bad player. However as a good player you should certainly be able to do better than the average opponent in freerolls. If for instance 200 players compete for 100$, then a good player should win more than 50c on average. Maybe he should win 70c or something.

Some people have the misconception, that its difficult to do well in freerolls or micro stakes tournaments, because the play is so loose and wild, and there is to much variance. But this is simply not true. In fact its easier to beat someone, who dont even care, if they lose, because they paid nothing, or the money is insignificant to them. On some poker sites like 888 you even see a certain percentage of the field sitting out during the entire tournament. And if you can not beat someone using that strategy, then you are indeed not a very good player ;)

Very well said, as usual. I could only add... Get Some Perspective People! UNDERSTAND THE GAME YOU ARE PLAYING... IT IS A FREEROLL. Do not expect people to play like it is the THE WSOP MAIN EVENT! Figure out a strategy to navigate this minefield.

Hi PokerPoet2,

I can relate to so many aspects of your post. Our poker history, other roads traveled, and mindset regarding winnings is frighteningly similar.

Thank you for the post, and it is nice to know that I am not alone...lol!

After all, freerolls are different. I really like SS freerolls. They are similar to paid tournaments, they do not have a crazy structure and few people. They train you well and give you a chance to win a good prize. Previously, I played a lot of freerolls, such as 888, where you can almost always win your 5 cents. :D I used such freerolls more as entertainment and a chance to save up or win money for a paid cheap tournament right away.

Free rolls are a great way to get free $$ and start a bank roll. Especially at sites like 888, ACR and party poker. poker stars is pretty much useless now. I remember when they had free rolls every half hour for every type of poker game under the sun. Winning tickets for the weekend $2K free rolls was fairly easy. I sure miss those days at PS. There is no down side to free rolls. It is a win win!

it is boring playing freerolls because of donks
once you can pass the first hour you can make it. Donks are gone and your skill can help you earn some $$
Good luck all

First you have to understand the fact that if you don't do well in freerolls it doesn't make you a bad poker player. Many of us started playing the free of the rooms, to get a kind of bank and jump into the game with real money, but the truth is that this task is not easy at all and such is the complexity of these tournaments, that one of the great professionals of this passionate game launched the challenge of reaching $ 0 to $ 100 unicamentate playing freeroll and although it is true that I achieved it, it was not at all in the time that I had estimated, if I remember correctly it took more than 6 months to achieve it .

The definitive recommendation is patience, work, a lot of effort and study to improve your game.

Each level is different from the other and this includes the same freeroll, it is very different to play a free to a real tournament of the lower levels.

Happy day and good luck at the tables

Yes it is true, I only put one caveat: fish, donk, losse calling station will have it in all limits. But I really agree that it changes the strategy from a Freeroll to a low stake for example ... but from micro to freeroll it doesn't change much.
And the CardsChat freerolls have a lot more gameplay.
I'm doing this challenge from 0 to 100! take a look: https://www.cardschat.com/forum/poker-goals-challenges-wins-46/0-00-100-challenge-473993/

Freerolls will always be tough coz the general skill of the playing field varies a lot ..the mantra is not to get demotivated

Not disappointed at all. You can participate in the tournament without investing your own funds. True, due to the large number of participants, the prize money is very small, but with the correct construction of your game, you can go a long way and win not bad money.

There are different freerolls and the game in these freerolls is different. In tournaments, there are also often not enough adequate players who with the J6o can run 100 BB and move your AA. The main thing is not to focus on such situations and not to do the same as these players, but to approach the game wisely and over time the result will show itself, even in freerolls. And at the expense of freerolls from CC, so here the composition of the participants and the game are very strong, you will not always see such competition in paid tournaments (at microlimits) ...

Even back at the online poker beginning for me, I built bankroll from freeroll - of course later on deposit too, never liked too much money on the poker account. But even in this year I managed to build medium, low level bankroll from freeroll, could make it quiet easily and fast, even nowadays i do the same again. I know it works, as it is freeroll and yes it makes sometimes even more upset, nervous than non free buyin tourneys, but earlier or later you 100% get the result.

Minefield

Playing in large freerolls is great because it costs you nothing. Everyone loves free money. With that being said, playing in freerolls is like trying to navigate your way through a minefield. One thing to keep in mind is that a large MTT is a marathon NOT a sprint!!! Let that sink in a bit. You can’t win the tournament, ANY tournament, in the beginning. You have to weather the storms to make it until the end when there is money in every decision. You have to keep that in mind early. I’d much rather count the money at the end than tell my bad luck or suckout situation that happened that busted me out of the tournament!!! Just my opinion!!

Stay Safe
